Procedure: Meta-Chloroperbenzoic acid (1.2 g, 11.7 mmol) was added to a solution of (4-bromophenyl)(trifluoromethyl)sulfane (1.7 g, 6.61 mmol) in dichloromethane (30 mL). After stirring at rt for 12 h, the reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and extracted with EtOAc (3×60 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4), concentrated, and purified by column chromatography on silica gel (EtOAc/petroleum ether=0:100 to 1:50) to give 859 mg of 1-bromo-4-((trifluoromethyl)sulfinyl)benzene as a white solid. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): δ 7.79-7.75 (m, 2H), 7.66 (d, 2H). 13C NMR (CDCl3, 100 MHz): δ 134.8, 133.0, 128.7, 127.4, 124.4 (q, J=330 Hz). extracted with EtOAc (3×60 mL) The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4) concentrated purified by column chromatography on silica gel (EtOAc/petroleum ether=0:100 to 1:50)

Procedure: To a degassed solution of 1-bromo-4-(trifluoromethylsulfanyl)benzene (4.8 g, 18.7 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (40 mL) was added in the following order: copper(I) iodide (106 mg, 0.56 mmol), tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium (647 mg, 0.56 mmol) and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (3.36 mL, 22.3 mmol). The resulting mixture was degassed one more time and a solution of propargyl alcohol (1.30 mL, 22.3 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (5 mL) was added over period of 10 min. The reaction mixture was slowly heated up to 50° C. and then stirred at this temperature for 6 h and then left to stand at ambient temperature over night. The mixture was diluted with ether (50 mL) and acidified with 5% hydrochloric acid to pH 2. Ethereal solution was washed with water (2×15 mL), saturated solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate (15 mL) and brine (15 mL), dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel Fluka 60, hexanes/ethyl acetate 85:15) affording 3-[4-(trifluoromethylsulfanyl)phenyl]prop-2-yn-1-ol. Procedure: A multinecked flask as described in Example 1 was charged with 5.4 g (0.021 mol) of p-bromophenyl trifluoromethyl sulfide, 75 ml of dried, degassed triethylamine, 2.46 g (0.021 mol) of 3-aminophenylacetylene, 0.048 g (0.068 mmol) of bis(triphenylphosphine) palladium II chloride, 0.0148 g (0.564 mmol) of triphenylphosphine, and 0.03 g (0.157 mmol) of cuprous iodide. The reaction mixture was heated at 75° C. for 20 hours after which gas chromatography showed the reaction to be complete. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and diluted with 75 ml of ether. Filtration of the insoluble triethylamine hydrobromide salt by-product followed by concentration of the filtrate gave the crude product in near quantitative yield as an off-white solid. Short path distillation of the crude product under reduced pressure gave 3.9 g (0.013 mol, 62% yield) of the purified product as a white solid.
