Procedure: In a manner similar to Example 2, Step (a), 2-fluoro-biphenyl (6.284 g, 0.0365 mol) was allowed to react with 3-carbomethoxypropionyl chloride (4.95 mL, 0.0402 mol) in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride (10.7 g, 0.0802 mol) in dichloromethane to give, after chromatography on silica gel (456 g, 230-400 mesh), eluting with chloroform (15×450 mL), 7.36 g of 4-(2′-fluoro-biphenyl-4-yl)-4-oxo-butyric acid, methyl ester as a pale yellow solid: mp 75.5-77.5° C. to give after chromatography on silica gel (456 g, 230-400 mesh), eluting with chloroform (15×450 mL), 7.36 g of 4-(2′-fluoro-biphenyl-4-yl)-4-oxo-butyric acid, methyl ester as a pale yellow solid

Procedure: Aluminum trichloride (6.2 g, 46.5 mmol) was suspended in 50 ml of dichloroethane, and 3.02 g (30.2 mmol) of succinic anhydride and 4.0 g (23.2 mmol) of 2-fluorobiphenyl were added thereto, followed by stirring the mixture at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction solution was poured in hydrochloric acid containing ice, and extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was washed with water, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, the residue was recrystallized from chloroform to obtain 5.6 g of the above-mentioned compound (yield 89%). containing ice extracted with chloroform The organic layer was washed with water dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate After the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure the residue was recrystallized from chloroform

Procedure: A solution of 200 g of 2-fluorobiphenyl in 1500 ml of carbon disulfide was cooled to 0°-5°C and successively treated with 200 g of aluminum chloride over a period of 140 minutes and 113 g of acetyl chloride over a period of 165 minutes. The resulting mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture then was poured carefully into a mixture of ice and aqueous hydrochloric acid. Organic materials were extracted from the resulting acidic mixture with a mixture of diethyl ether and ethyl acetate. The organic extract was washed successively with water, ten percent aqueous sodium hydroxide, and water, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure and the solid residue was recrystallized from hexane to give 4'-(2-fluorophenyl)-acetophenone. Recrystallization of the material from hexane gave two crops of crystals having the following elemental analyses: Organic materials were extracted from the resulting acidic mixture with a mixture of diethyl ether and ethyl acetate The organic extract was washed successively with water, ten percent aqueous sodium hydroxide, and water dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate The solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure the solid residue was recrystallized from hexane
