Procedure: 2-Ethylfuran (9.1 g) was dissolved in diethyl ether, and the mixture was cooled to -70° C. under nitrogen atmosphere. n-Butyllithium (1.6M in hexane, 60 ml) was slowly added dropwise. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours, and then cooled to -70° C. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes with introducing carbon dioxide gas, and then warmed to room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes, poured into ice-water, acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether. The extract was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was crystallized from water and collected by filtration to give 5-ethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (9.0 g). cooled to -70° C warmed to room temperature The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes extracted with diethyl ether The extract was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride concentrated under reduced pressure The residue was crystallized from water collected by filtration

Procedure: A sample of DMF (9.3 mL, 120 mmol) was cooled to 0° C. and POCl3 (3.37 g, 22 mmol) was added, the mixture was stirred for 1 hour at 0° C., then 2-ethyl furan (1.92 g, 20 mmol) was added. The reaction was quenched by pouring onto ice, and the mixture was stirred for 18 hours. The mixture was extracted with hexane, which was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give 1.71 g of the title compound (used without further purification). Procedure: n-BuLi (2.5 M in hexane, 4.4 mL, 11 mmol) was added to a solution of 2-ethylfuran (1.05 mL, 10 mmol) in THF (10 mL) at −25° C. The solution was warmed to rt and stirred for 3 h. Ethylene oxide (0.75 mL) was added at −78° C. The reaction was stirred for 0.5 h at −15° C. and overnight at rt. Aqueous sat. NH4Cl was added and the mixture was extracted with ether (3×). The combined extracts were washed with water (1×) and brine (1×) and dried over Na2SO4. Purification by flash chromatography on silica gel eluting with 30% EtOAc/70% hexane gave 1.12 g (8.02 mmol, 80.2%) of 2v(1) as a yellow oil. The reaction was stirred for 0.5 h at −15° C. and overnight at rt the mixture was extracted with ether (3×) The combined extracts were washed with water (1×) and brine (1×) dried over Na2SO4 Purification by flash chromatography on silica gel eluting with 30% EtOAc/70% hexane
