Procedure: Thiourea (3.04 g, 0.04 mol) was added to a solution of 3-chloro-4-methoxybenzyl bromide (4.0 g, 0.02 mol) in ethanol (200 ml) and refluxed for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was subsequently dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (30 g, 0.75 mol in 300 ml water) and heated at 80° C. for one hour. The reaction mixture was cooled with an ice bath and acidified by addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The product was isolated by extraction three times into diethyl ether. The combined organic phases were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo, to give the subtitle compound as a colourless oil in 83% yield (3.0 g). refluxed for 16 hours The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo The reaction mixture was cooled with an ice bath The combined organic phases were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate filtered concentrated in vacuo

Procedure: 3-Chloro-4-methoxytoluene 8 (2.6 mL, 19.2 mmol) was dissolved in dichlomethane (30 mL) and N-bromosuccinimide (3.75 g, 21.1 mmol) was added followed by AIBN (36.0 mg). The reaction was heated to reflux for 19 hrs., then cooled to room temperature and the precipitate was filtered off. The filtrate was diluted with dichloromethane and washed with 0.5 M aqueous sodium bicarbonate, followed by water. The organic mixture was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under vacuum to yield 9 (4.73 g, 82%). The benzyl bromide was used as the crude material without further purification. was added The reaction was heated to reflux for 19 hrs the precipitate was filtered off The filtrate was diluted with dichloromethane washed with 0.5 M aqueous sodium bicarbonate The organic mixture was dried over sodium sulfate filtered concentrated under vacuum

Procedure: In the same manner as in Example 1 and using 5-(2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-5-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol instead of 5-(benzothiazol-6-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol and 3-chloro-4-methoxybenzyl bromide instead of 3-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl chloride, the title compound (yield 87%) was obtained as colorless crystals.
