Procedure: To a solution of 3-bromophenylacetonitrile (12 g, 61.2 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (150 ml) cooled down to 0° C., was added 60% sodium hydride in mineral oil (2.25 g, 56.3 mmol) portionwise over 10 minutes. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 40 minutes. Methyl iodide (5.71 ml, 91.8 mmol) was added dropwise at 0° C. and the reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for a further 1 hour. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (250 ml), washed with water and brine. The organic phase was dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified on silica gel by flash column chromatography (ISCO Companion, 330 g column, 0-20% EtOAc/Petrol) to afford the title compound as a colourless oil (7.06 g, 55% yield). the reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for a further 1 hour washed with water and brine The organic phase was dried over magnesium sulfate filtered concentrated in vacuo The residue was purified on silica gel by flash column chromatography (ISCO Companion, 330 g column, 0-20% EtOAc/Petrol)

Procedure: A stirred solution of 3-bromophenylacetonitrile (10.0 g, 51.0 mmol), tributyltin methoxide (17.6 mL, 61.2 mmol), tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium(0) (500 mg, 0.5 mmol), isopropenyl acetate (6.74 mL, 61.2 mmol) and 2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2′-(N,N-dimethylamino)biphenyl (800 mg, 2 mmol) in toluene (100 mL, degassed) was heated at 100° C. under nitrogen for 6 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and EtOAc (30 mL) was added. A solution of potassium fluoride (10 g, 200 mmol) in water (52 mL) was then added and the resulting mixture was stirred overnight. Brine was added and the mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite. The layers were separated and the organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered (cotton plug) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (0-30% EtOAc in hexanes) to give the title compound (6.1 g, 69% yield) as a brown oil. the mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite The layers were separated the organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate filtered (cotton plug) concentrated under reduced pressure The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (0-30% EtOAc in hexanes)

Procedure: To a solution of sodium ethoxide prepared from sodium (2.51 g) and ethanol (40 ml) was added dropwise a solution of 2-(3-bromophenyl)acetonitrile (17.8 g) in ethanol (30 ml) at 0° C., and then isoamyl nitrite (18.3 ml) was added dropwise thereto. After stirring at room temperature for 18 hours, diethyl ether was added, and washed successively with 1N hydrochloric acid, an aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution, and an aqueous saturated solution of sodium chloride. The diethyl ether layer was dried (MgSO4), concentrated, and the residue was subjected to silica gel chromatography to obtain 2-(3-bromophenyl)-2-(hydroxyimino)acetonitrile (19.9 g, yield 97%) as an orange paste from an ethyl acetate-hexane (1:1, v/v)-eluted fraction. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexane gave orange crystals. m.p. 91-93° C. washed successively with 1N hydrochloric acid The diethyl ether layer was dried (MgSO4) concentrated
