Procedure: A complex (4) (1.9 mg, 1 mol %) was weighed out in a Schlenk flask, to which racemic phenylmethylsulfoxide (28 mg, 0.2 mmol) was added. Water (0.5 mL) was added, followed by stirring for 10 minutes at 20° C. A 30% hydrogen peroxide solution (9 μL, 0.4 eq) was added, followed by stirring the resultant mixture for 3 hours at room temperature. To the reaction mixture, water (5 mL) was added, followed by extraction using ethyl acetate. An organic phase was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, followed by filtration and then it was concentrated under reduced pressure. By purifying the concentrate using silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate), 6.5 mg (21% yield) of phenylmethylsulfone was obtained, and 22.1 mg of phenylmethylsulfoxide (79%) was recovered. Optical purity was determined to be 12% ee for a S form after measured by HPLC analysis. was added followed by extraction An organic phase was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate followed by filtration it was concentrated under reduced pressure By purifying the concentrate

Procedure: Phenyl methyl sulphone (4.0 g) was added, portionwise, to fuming nitric acid stirred at 0° C. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature, stirred for 1 hour, and then poured carefully onto ice. The solution was carefully neutralised with sodium bicarbonate and the mixture filtered at the pump. The solid collected was washed with water and dried under reduced pressure over potassium hydroxide to give the title compound as a white solid (5.63 g) in a sufficient state of purity for the next reaction. poured carefully onto ice the mixture filtered at the pump The solid collected was washed with water dried under reduced pressure over potassium hydroxide

Procedure: A solution of 2.5M nBuLi in hexanes (1.9 mL, 4.7 mmol) was added to a solution of diisopropylamine (660 μL, 4.7 mmol) in THF (9.0 mL) at ambient temperature. After 10 min, the mixture was cooled to −78° C. and methyl phenyl sulfone (700 mg, 4.5 mmol) was added to the reaction vessel. The cold bath was removed and after stirring for 30 min, 1-bromo-2-cyclohexylethane (1.3 g, 6.7 mmol) was added to the reaction mixture. The mixture was allowed to warm to ambient temperature and stir for 18 hours. A solution of 2N HCl was added to the reaction mixture followed by extraction with EtOAc (2×). The organic phases were combined, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The residue was chromatographed (silica gel; EtOAc/hexanes, 1:8) to afford a clear oil (620 mg, 52%). 1H NMR (CDCl3, MHz) δ 0.75-0.91 (m, 2H), 1.07-1.26 (m, 6H), 1.58-1.76 (m, 7H), 3.06 (t, J=8 Hz, 2H), 7.55-7.70 (m, 3H), 7.92 (m, 2H); MS (CI/NH3) m/z: (M+NH4)+ 284. The cold bath was removed to warm to ambient temperature stir for 18 hours followed by extraction with EtOAc (2×) dried (MgSO4) concentrated The residue was chromatographed (silica gel; EtOAc/hexanes, 1:8)
