Procedure: Methyl 3-bromo-4-hydroxybenzoate [prepared as per Tetrahedron, 2003, 59, 9173] (3.47 g, 15.0 mmol) was dissolved in acetonitrile (50 ml), anhydrous potassium carbonate (3.11 g, 22.5 mmol) was added and the stirred mixture was treated with benzyl bromide (3.08 g, 18.0 mmol) and held at reflux for 5 hours. Upon cooling the solvent was removed in vacuo and the mixture partitioned between water and dichloromethane. The organic layer was separated, the solvent removed in vacuo and the residue subjected to column chromatography on silica. Elution with 10% ethyl acetate in petroleum ether afforded methyl 4-benzyloxy-3-bromobenzoate (3.6 g, 75%) as a colourless solid. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) 8.12 (1H, d), 7.96 (1H, dd), 7.51 (2H, m), 7.43 (2H, t), 7.35 (2H, m), 5.32 (2H, s), 3.84 (3H, s). at reflux for 5 hours Upon cooling the solvent was removed in vacuo the mixture partitioned between water and dichloromethane The organic layer was separated the solvent removed in vacuo Elution with 10% ethyl acetate in petroleum ether

Procedure: To a stirred solution of 3-bromo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (available from Alfa Aesar, Avocado, Lancaster) (50.0 g, 231 mmol) in MeOH (300 mL) was added a cold solution of sulfuric acid (2.50 mL, 47 mmol). The mixture was heated to 80° C. and monitored by TLC. After 16.5 hours, the solvent was removed and the reaction mixture was diluted with EtOAc. The organic phase was washed carefully two times with saturated aqueous NaHCO3, once with brine, and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. After filtration, the organic solvent was removed in vacuo to yield T3.1 as a white solid (yield 100%) that was used without purification. the solvent was removed the reaction mixture was diluted with EtOAc The organic phase was washed carefully two times with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 once with brine, and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate After filtration the organic solvent was removed in vacuo

Procedure: Methyl 3-bromo-4-hydroxybenzoate (37.81 g) was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (250 mL), and copper cyanide (22.03 g) was added to the solution. After stirring the mixture at 150° C. for 16 hours, potassium carbonate (68.00 g) and chloromethyl methyl ether (14.8 mL) were added to the solution under ice cooling, and then the mixture was stirred for 2 hours. The reaction solution was filtered and water was added, and then the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. After the operation of adding water to the organic layer, stirring the mixture, filtering the mixture and separating the organic layer was repeated three times, the organic layer was washed with saturated brine and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure and the obtained residue was dissolved in chloroform (30 mL). Trifluoroacetic acid (30 mL) was added to the solution, and then the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure and the obtained residue was washed with a mixture of n-hexane and ethyl acetate in a mixing ratio of 2:1 to obtain the title compound (6.53 g) as a pale yellow crystal. the mixture was stirred for 2 hours The reaction solution was filtered water was added the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate After the operation of adding water to the organic layer, stirring the mixture filtering the mixture separating the organic layer the organic layer was washed with saturated brine dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure the obtained residue was dissolved in chloroform (30 mL) Trifluoroacetic acid (30 mL) was added to the solution the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure the obtained residue was washed with a mixture of n-hexane and ethyl acetate in a mixing ratio of 2:1
