Procedure: A solution of (±) N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-1,2-iminoindane (2.33 g, 10 mmol), 2-hydroxy diphenylmethane (1.84 g, 10 mmol) and pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate (50 mg) in chloroform (100 ml) was heated at reflux for 3 h. On cooling, the solution was washed sequentially with aq. NaHCO3, water and then brine. After drying over Na2SO4, solvents were removed in vacuo and the resultant brown oil subjected to column chromatography on silica gel eluting with 10% diethyl ether in hexanes to afford a pale yellow oil which was a mixture of the desired adduct and the starting phenol. This mixture was taken up in 1:1 diethyl ether:pentane (200 ml) and washed three times with a 1:1 mixture of methanol and 10% aq. NaOH. After washing with water then brine, the organics were dried over Na2SO4 and then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was recrystallised to afford the title compound as a white solid (1.03 g) m.p. 113°-114.5° C. (from diethyl ether-pentane). at reflux for 3 h On cooling the solution was washed sequentially with aq. NaHCO3, water After drying over Na2SO4, solvents were removed in vacuo to afford a pale yellow oil which pentane (200 ml) and washed three times with a 1:1 mixture of methanol and 10% aq. NaOH After washing with water brine, the organics were dried over Na2SO4 concentrated in vacuo The residue was recrystallised

Procedure: A German patent, Ger.Offen 2,547,0310 (1977), disclosed the preparation of o-benzyl-toluenes by the reaction of o-methylbenzyl halides with substituted benzenes in the presence of Al-silicate. The 2-CH3C6H4CH2Cl was stirred with toluene and Al-silicate (25% Al2O3) at 110° C. to give 81% 2-methylbenzyltoluene. According to a Japanese patent, Jpn. Kokai Tokkyo Koho JP 59,186,937 (1984), o-benzylphenol was prepared by the liquid phase reaction of benzyl alcohol with phenol in the presence of γ-Al2O3. For example 7.5 g γ-Al2O3 was added to a mixture of 32.5 g benzyl alcohol and 47 g phenol at 190° C. under stirring to give a product containing 49.9% o-benzylphenol. A German patent, Ger. Offen DE 3,700,917 (1988), disclosed the preparation of p-substituted o-benzylphenols by benzylation of p-substituted phenols with benzylalcohol in the presence of Na—Y type zeolite. A mixture of 0.5 mole 4-ClC6H4OH, 0.1 mole C6H5CH2OH and 0.6 g of Na—Y type zeolite was heated at 200° C. for 3 hrs to give 25.4% 2-benzyl-4-chlorophenol. to give a product

Procedure: To a solution of 2-(4-chlorobenzyl)phenol (618.5 mg, 2.83 mmol) in methanol (20 mL), a 20% palladium hydroxide catalyst (240 mg) was added. The mixture was stirred under a hydrogen atmosphere for three days, and then the catalyst was filtered off. The solvent was distilled under reduced pressure and the obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography [developing solution=ethyl acetate:n-hexane (1:4)] to obtain the title compound (348.4 mg, 67%). the catalyst was filtered off The solvent was distilled under reduced pressure the obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography [developing solution=ethyl acetate:n-hexane (1:4)]

Procedure: To a warm, stirred mixture of sodium hydroxide (8.0 g) in water (8.00 ml) was added a warmed solution of 2-hydroxydiphenylmethane (1), (4.9 g, 27 mmol) in ethanol (4 ml) and the mixture heated to 65° C. Chloroform (4.1 ml) was added down a water condensor and the resulting mixture began to reflux. After 1 h at reflux, the mixture was cooled in ice, acidified to pH 2 with 1N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 ml). The combined extracts were dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent removed to yield a dark brown gum. The product was eluted through a silica column, using 0-10% ethyl acetate in petroleum spirit to yield a yellow oil (1.33 g, 24%) to reflux After 1 h at reflux the mixture was cooled in ice extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 ml) The combined extracts were dried (Na2SO4) the solvent removed to yield a dark brown gum The product was eluted through a silica column

Procedure: 4-Chloro-6,7-dimethoxyquinoline (230 mg) and 2-benzylphenol (254 mg) were suspended in o-dichlorobenzene (1 ml), and the suspension was stirred at 180° C. overnight. The reaction solution was cooled to room temperature, and water was added thereto. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was then washed with water and saturated brine and was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was then removed therefrom by distillation under the reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by thin layer chromatography using ethyl acetate-hexane to give the title compound (40 mg, yield 10%). Procedure: Using the method of Tramposch, Kung and Blau (J. Med. Chem. (1983) 26, 121), 2-hydroxydiphenylmethane was converted to 3-(phenylmethyl)salicylaldehyde in 56% yield: NMR (CDCl3) 11.35 (s, 1H), 9.35 (s, 1H), 7.45-6.85 (m, 8H), 4.00 (s, 2H); Mass spec (CI) 213. This hydroxyaldehyde (31.3 g, 0.147 mole) was treated with benzyl bromide (25.2 g, 0.147 mole) and potassium carbonate (22.1 g, 0.16 mole) in N,N-dimethylformamide (180 mL) at 100° overnight. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. Distillation of the residue (170°-185°, 0.1 torr) provided the title material as a pale yellow viscous oil in 71% yield. NMR (CDCl3) 10.3 (s, 1H), 7.8-7.1 (m, 13H), 4.9 (s, 2H), 4.05 (s, 2H). extracted with ethyl acetate The organic phase was washed with water dried over magnesium sulfate filtered concentrated under reduced pressure Distillation of the residue (170°-185°, 0.1 torr)
