Procedure: A 500 mL round-bottom flask is charged with methyl 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)acetate (8.496 g, 47 mmol, 1 eq) and THF (200 mL). The homogeneous mixture is cooled to 0° C. in an ice bath. Lithium diisopropyl amide (23.5 mL of a 2.0M solution in heptane/THF) is added, maintaining a temperature less than 3° C. The reaction is stirred 45 minutes at this reduced temperature. Benzyl bromide (5.6 mL, 47 mmol, 1 eq) is added dropwise. The reaction is allowed to gradually warm to room temperature and is stirred for 18 hours. The reaction is quenched with 1N HCl and extracted 3 times with equal portions of EtOAc. The combined extracts are washed with H2O and brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated. The residue is purified over silica to afford 4.433 g (35%) of the desired compound. ESI+ MS 293 (M+Na). maintaining a temperature less than 3° C to gradually warm to room temperature is stirred for 18 hours The reaction is quenched with 1N HCl extracted 3 times with equal portions of EtOAc The combined extracts are washed with H2O and brine dried over Na2SO4 filtered concentrated The residue is purified over silica

Procedure: Lithium aluminum hydride (21 g, 0.55 mol) was added to a solution of (2-methoxy-phenyl)-acetic acid methyl ester (90 g, 0.50 mol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (500 mL) at 0° C. After stirred at 0° C. for 30 minutes, the mixture was treated with sodium hydroxide (5% aqueous solution, 180 g). The mixture was extracted three times with ethyl acetate (400 mL) and the combined organic layers were washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated to dryness to give 2-(2-methoxy-phenyl)-ethanol (43 g, 0.28 mol, 57%), which was used directly in the next step. Procedure: Triflic acid (7.3 mL, 43.4 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of thioxanthone oxide (5.00 g, 21.7 mmol) and methyl 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)acetate (4.31 g, 23.9 mmol) in DCM (60 mL) at −78° C. and slowly warmed to 25° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was quenched with water (100 mL), the layers separated, and the aqueous phase washed with water (4×100 mL) and concentrated to a crude solid. The crude solid was dissolved in minimal acetone, precipitated into MTBE (1 L), and filtered to afford the title compound (10.0 g, 85%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (500 MHz, (CD3)2CO) δ: 8.66-8.69 (m, 2H), 8.19-8.22 (m, 3H), 8.10-8.13 (m, 4H), 7.91 (d, J=2.5 Hz, 1H), 7.37 (d, J=9 Hz, 1H), 3.96 (s, 3H), 3.61 (s, 2H), 3.57 (s, 3H). Procedure: To a solution of aluminum chloride (35.0 g, 262.5 mmol) in dichloromethane (75 mL) was added a solution of (2-Methoxy-phenyl)-acetic acid methyl ester (13.5 g, 75.0 mmol) and acetyl chloride (5.86 mL, 82.5 mmol)in dichloromethane (75 mL) dropwise. After the addition was complete the reaction was heated to reflux for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was then cooled and carefully poured onto a mixture of ice and water. The aqueous layer was then extracted with ethyl acetate (2×400 mL). The combined extracts were then washed with saturated sodium chloride (1×100 mL), dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield a solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO): δ 10.51 (s, 1H), 7.79 (m, 2H), 6.88 (d, 1H), 3.63 (s, 2H), 3.59 (s, 3H), 2.47 (s, 3H).
