Procedure: 50 g of N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-p-dimethylaminobenzamide (0.201 mole) from Example 1 and 47 g of tetradecylchloride (0.195 mole) were melted together and kept at 130° C. for 4 hours. Product was crystallized from 250 ml of ethylacetate; the crystals were washed with another 150 ml of ethylacetate. Yield was 71 g (74% of theoretical yield). Procedure: A 1 l jacketed glass reactor with a glass paddle stirrer, an immersed tube for reactant metering and an attached water separator is initially charged with 200 g of N-n-octylalkylpyridinium chloride (prepared according to Example 2) as catalyst and adjusted to a temperature of 150° C. 243 g of n-tetradecanol are introduced uniformly via the immersed tube within 4.5 h.
