Procedure: A mixture of 10 g of o-phenoxyanisol, 80 ml of hydroiodic acid (52%), 80 ml of acetic acid and 40 ml of acetic anhydride was refluxed for 1.5 hours. After being cooled, the reaction mixture was poured into ice-water to deposit a precipitate. The precipitate was dissolved in ether, and the solution was washed with an aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution, an aqueous saturated thiosulfuric acid aqueous solution and then an aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution. This ether solution was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was removed to give yellow solids. The solids were dissolved in acetic acid and stirred. The mixture was poured into cold water to deposit crystals. The crystals were washed with water and then with n-hexane, and dried at 80° C. under reduced pressure to obtain 7.8 g of o-phenoxyphenol as slightly yellow powders. was refluxed for 1.5 hours After being cooled the solution was washed with an aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution This ether solution was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate the solvent was removed to give yellow solids The crystals were washed with water with n-hexane, and dried at 80° C. under reduced pressure

Procedure: To a solution of 0.63 g (3.36 mmol) of 2-phenoxyphenol and 0.62 g (4.48 mmol) of K2CO3 in 75 mL acetone at ambient temperature was added 1.00 g (2.24 mmol) of 1-(4-bromo-2-fluorobenzyl)-2-(n-propyl)-4-ethyl-5-bromoacetyl-1H-imidazole obtained from Part B of Example 11 in 25 mL acetone. After stirring at reflux overnight, the reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with 3×100 mL ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and the solvents evaporated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by flash column chromatography using 10-40% ethyl acetate in hexane, which provided 0.16 g (6.3%) of a clear oil after evaporation of solvents under reduced pressure. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 0.95 (t, 3H, J=7.3 Hz); 1.29 (t, 3H, J =7.3 Hz); 1.66 (m, 2H); 2.60 (m, 2H); 2.81 (q, 2H, J=7.3 Hz); 5.00 (s, 2H); 6.38 (t, 1H, J=7.8 Hz); 6.89-7.29 (m, 10H). ##STR106## at reflux overnight extracted with 3×100 mL ethyl acetate The combined organic layers were washed with brine dried over MgSO4 filtered the solvents evaporated under reduced pressure The crude product was purified by flash column chromatography

Procedure: A solution of 23.4 g (74.9 mmol) of boron tribromide-dimethyl sulfide complex in 150 mL of 1,2-dichloroethane was added dropwise to 3.00 g (15.0 mmol) of 2-methoxyphenyl phenyl ether in 50 mL dichloroethane at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at reflux overnight. 50 mL 3M NaOH was added to quench the reaction. After separation of layers, the organic layer was extracted with 3×100 mL 3M NaOH. The combined aqueous layer was acidified with conc. HCl, and the precipitated product was extracted with 3×150 mL ethyl ether. After washing with brine solution, drying over MgSO4, and filtering, solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure to give 2.30 g (82.4%) of an off-white solid, which was used without further purification. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 5.57 (s, 1H); 6.81-6.90 (m, 2H); 7.01-7.07 (m, 4H); 7.12 (t, 1H, J=7.3 Hz); 7.31-7.38 (m, 2H). ##STR105## at reflux overnight to quench the reaction After separation of layers the organic layer was extracted with 3×100 mL 3M NaOH the precipitated product was extracted with 3×150 mL ethyl ether After washing with brine solution drying over MgSO4 filtering solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure

Procedure: A 500 ml. reaction flask equipped with stirrer, condenser, and Dean Stark trap was charged with 191 g. (1.03 moles) of o-phenoxyphenol, 50 ml. of toluene and 39.5 g. (0.70 mole) of potassium hydroxide. The mixture was heated to reflux and water azeotroped from the system. Diglyme (100 ml.) was then added followed by 20 g. (0.053 mole) of 3-chloro-3'-(m-phenoxyphenoxy)biphenyl over a 30 minute period. To this mixture 2.5 g. of cuprous chloride and 0.5 g. of copper powder was added and after removing the diglyme be distillation, the reaction mixture was heated at 230°-240° for 18 hours. The mixture was cooled, diluted with 500 ml. of ether and centrifuged to remove copper and potassium salts. The salts were washed with additional ether, and the ether fractions combined and washed with 25% potassium hydroxide solution followed by water washing to neutrality. After drying the ethereal solution over magnesium sulfate, and removing ether in vacuo, the resulting oil was distilled to give 16.9 g of the desired product, bp 255°-260°/0.02 mm.; nD25 1.6480. reaction flask equipped with stirrer, condenser Dean Stark trap was charged with 191 g The mixture was heated to reflux water azeotroped from the system Diglyme (100 ml.) was then added after removing the diglyme distillation the reaction mixture was heated at 230°-240° for 18 hours The mixture was cooled diluted with 500 ml to remove copper and potassium salts The salts were washed with additional ether washed with 25% potassium hydroxide solution After drying the ethereal solution over magnesium sulfate removing ether in vacuo the resulting oil was distilled
