Procedure: A mixture of methyl 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)butyrate (4.93 g, 0.025 mol) and hydrazine hydrate (25.4 g, 0.254 mol) in methanol (64 mL) was heated under reflux for an hour. It was then cooled down to room temperature and stirred overnight. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate (100 mL) and water (100 mL). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to dryness to give the titled compound as a white crystal (3.30 g, 67%). 400 MHz 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 9.10 (s, 1H), 8.89 (s, 1H), 6.93 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 6.63 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 3.32 (s, 2H), 2.40 (t, J=7.6 Hz, 2H), 1.97 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 1.71−1.67 (m, 2H); Mass (M−H−)=193.27. was heated under reflux for an hour The solvent was evaporated the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate (100 mL) and water (100 mL) The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 filtered concentrated to dryness

Procedure: To a solution of 0.69 g of 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)butyric acid in 10 mL of DMF was added 0.956 g of sodium bicarbonate followed by 0.36 mL of iodomethane and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 h. The reaction was then diluted with water, extracted with ether, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to provide 0.553 g of methyl 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)butyrate. extracted with ether dried over MgSO4 filtered concentrated in vacuo

Procedure: 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)butanoic acid methyl ester (2) (2.6 g) from the previous step was dissolved in N,N′-dimethylformamide (30 mL), 1,2-dibromoethane (12.6 g) and potassium carbonate (3.7 g) were added, and stirred at 80° C. for two days. The reaction solution was poured into water, and extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL). The organic layer was washed with water (50 mL) and saturated sodium chloride solution (50 mL). After drying on anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtration and vacuum concentration, the residue was purified by silica gel flash column chromatography (developing solvent: n-hexane:ethyl acetate=8:1) to give the above-identified compound (676 mg, yield 17%). extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL) The organic layer was washed with water (50 mL) and saturated sodium chloride solution (50 mL) After drying on anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtration and vacuum concentration the residue was purified by silica gel flash column chromatography (developing solvent: n-hexane:ethyl acetate=8:1)
