Procedure: A solution of 50 (1.786 g, 7.00 mmol) and 4-piperidone propylene ketal (2.645 g, 16.82 mmol) in toluene (30 mL) was treated with sodium tert-butoxide (1.88 g, 19.56 mmol), (S)-BINAP (44 mg, 0.07 mmol), and tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium(0) (32 mg, 0.035 mmol) at room temperature. The mixture was heated in an oil bath (80° C., 3 h). The mixture was diluted with ether and brine. The aqueous layer was extracted with two additional portions of ether and the combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure. PCTLC (SiO2, 6 mm, 20% EtOAc-80% hexane) afforded the title compound (51). The aqueous layer was extracted with two additional portions of ether the combined organic extracts were washed with brine dried over Na2SO4 concentrated under reduced pressure

Procedure: A solution of 2-bromophenol (5.89 g, 34.0 mmol) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyliodide (16.8 g, 80.0 mmol) in DMF (60 mL) was treated with potassium carbonate (24.1 g, 174 mmol) at room temperature. The resulting mixture was heated in an oil bath (60° C., 2 d). The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue dissolved in ether and water. The aqueous layer was extracted with two additional portions of ether and the combined organic extracts were washed with three portions of 1M NaOH solution and dried over Na2SO4. The solvent was removed in vacuo to afford the title compound (50). Procedure: To a solution of 1.0 g (3.93 mmol) of 2-trifluoroethoxyphenyl bromide (Example 2, Step A) in 39 mL of toluene was added 0.136 g (0.118 mmol) of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0), 0.56 g (4.31 mol) of 3-aminophenylboronic acid, 47 mL (94.1 mmol) of a 2M solution of sodium carbonate and 8 mL of ethanol and the reaction mixture was heated at 90° C. for 22 hr. The reaction mixtur was colld to RT, and partitioned between water and EtOAc. The aqueous fraction was extracted with EtOAc nd the combined organic fractions were washed with water and brine and dried over Na2SO4, filtered and the filtrate was concentrated. The residue was purified by chromatography (silica, 4:1 hexanes:EtOAc) to give the title compound.
