Procedure: To a solution of 2-methyl-2-phenyl-propionic acid (82 g, 0.5 mol) in THF (200 mL) was added dropwise borane-dimethyl sulfide (2M, 100 mL) at 0-5° C. The mixture was stirred at this temperature for 30 min and then heated at reflux for 1 h. After cooling, methanol (150 mL) and water (50 mL) were added. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (100 mL×3), and the combined organic layers were washed with water and brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give 2-methyl-2-phenyl-propan-1-ol as an oil (70 g, 77%). heated at reflux for 1 h After cooling The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (100 mL×3) the combined organic layers were washed with water and brine dried over Na2SO4 concentrated

Procedure: Ethyl 2-methyl-2-phenylpropionate (XXXVIII, 4.50 g, 23.5 mmol) is added to lithium aluminum hydride (0.908 g, 23.5 mmol) in dry ether (100 ml) cooled at 0°. After stirring for 2.5 hr, the mixture is quenched by adding, successively, water (1 ml), aqueous sodium hydroxide (15%, 1 ml) and water (3 ml). After stirring for several minutes, the solids are filtered off and washed well with ether. The filtrate is washed twice with saline and the organic phase is separated, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanol (XLV), NMR (CDCl3) 1.34, 3.62, 3.71, 7.22 and 7.31-7.41 δ. cooled at 0° the mixture is quenched by adding After stirring for several minutes the solids are filtered off washed well with ether The filtrate is washed twice with saline the organic phase is separated dried over magnesium sulfate concentrated

Procedure: 2-methyl-2-phenyl-propanol (Intermediate 3) (0.5 kg) and pyridine (268 ml) were charged to a reactor and chilled to 0° C. Acetic anhydride (680 gms) was slowly added through a dropper at 10-20° C. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours at 10-20° C. Ethyl acetate (1.5 ltr) was added and chilled water (2 ltrs) was slowly added through a dropper at 10-20° C. The mixture was stirred for ½ hr. The ethyl acetate layer was separated and 10% chilled dilute HCl was added. The ethyl acetate layer was then washed with sodium bicarbonate until a pH of 7 was obtained. The ethyl acetate layer was dried with sodium sulphate and concentrated under vacuum. The resulting oil was distilled under vacuum (15 mm of Hg), at 80-100° C. was slowly added through a dropper at 10-20° C The mixture was stirred for ½ hr The ethyl acetate layer was separated 10% chilled dilute HCl was added The ethyl acetate layer was then washed with sodium bicarbonate until a pH of 7 was obtained The ethyl acetate layer was dried with sodium sulphate concentrated under vacuum The resulting oil was distilled under vacuum (15 mm of Hg), at 80-100° C.

Procedure: To a solution of oxalylchloride (4.1 ml) in dichloromethane (100 ml) was added dropwise a solution of dimethylsufoxide (7.14 g) in dichloromethane (10 ml) at -60° C., and the mixture was stirred for 10 minutes. To the resultant mixture was added a solution of 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanol (6.16 g) in dichloromethane (15 ml) at the same temperature. After stirring for one hour, to the mixture was added triethylamine (20.7 g). The mixture was further stirred for 30 minutes and allowed to room temperature. After adding water, the mixture was extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resultant residue was subjected to silica gel (40 g) column chromatography and elution with 2% ethyl acetate hexane solution gave 4.93 g of 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanal. Procedure: To a suspension of lithium aluminum hydride (1.71 g) in tetrahydrofuran (50 ml) was dropwise added a solution of methyl 2-methyl-2-phenylpropionate (7.97 g) in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) under ice cooling and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. To the reaction solution was dropwise added water and then a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate, and the solution was extracted with ether. The ehter layer was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resultant residue was subjected to silica gel (100 g) column chromatography. Elution with a mixture solution of hexane-ethyl acetate (2:1) gave 6.32 9 of 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanol. a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate, and the solution was extracted with ether The ehter layer was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate concentrated under reduced pressure Elution with a mixture solution of hexane-ethyl acetate (2:1)
