Procedure: In analogy to the preparation of Example 1, 100 mg (0.38 mmol) of 4-(methylsulphanyl)-6-oxo-2-(3-thienylmethyl)-1,6-dihydropyrimidine-5-carbonitrile are reacted with 536 mg (3.80 mmol) of 4-tert-butylpiperidine to give 57 mg (42% of theory) of the title compound.

Procedure: 17.4 g (123.6 mmol) of 4-tert-butylpiperidine, 9.0 g (30.9 mmol) of 8-tert-butyl-2-bromomethyl-1,4-dioxaspiro[4,5]decane (cis/trans mixture) and 4.3 g (30.9 mmol) of potassium carbonate in 100 ml of absolute dimethylformamide were heated at 150° C. for 8 hours. Some of the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, the residue was taken up with dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solution/methylene chloride and the solution was worked up in a conventional manner. Some of the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure

Procedure: Cyanoacetic acid (1.75 g., 0.02 mole) was dissolved in 10 ml. of dioxane. In a five minute period 4-t-butylpiperidine (2.8 g., 0.02 mole) was added, the temperature rose to 25° C. from 15° C. obtained by prior cooling with an ice bath. The mixture which solidified became fluid upon the addition of 37% aqueous formaldehyde (3.6 g., 0.04 mole), the temperature rose to 30° C. and carbon dioxide evolution began. The mixture was stirred an additional 12 hours, was taken up in ether and the organic phase separated and washed with water. The dried ether solution was stripped of solvent to leave a solid residue product, 3.7 g. of practically analytical purity. In place of 4-t-butylpiperidine, the use of 2-methylpiperidine (0.02 mole) provided 2-[(2-methyl-1-piperidyl)methyl]propenenitrile as a colorless oil, RfSiO2 0.58 (5% ethanol in methylene chloride). rose to 25° C. from 15° C. obtained by prior cooling with an ice bath rose to 30° C. the organic phase separated washed with water to leave a solid residue product, 3.7 g
