Procedure: A mixture of (2S)-oxiran-2-ylmethyl-3-nitrobenzenesulfonate (388.5 mg, 1.50 mmol), 2-hydroxy-N-methylbenzamide (226.5 mg, 1.50 mmol) and cesium carbonate (586 mg, 1.80 mmol) in dimethylformamide (6 mL) was kept on stirring at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic phase was dried over sodium sulphate, Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel flash chromatography (0-50% ethyl acetate in petroleum ether) to give the subtitled compound (284 mg). The reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water The organic phase was dried over sodium sulphate, Na2SO4 filtered concentrated The residue was purified by silica gel flash chromatography (0-50% ethyl acetate in petroleum ether)

Procedure: To a solution of 2-Hydroxy-N-methyl-benzamide (0.5 g, 3.31 mmol prepared according to Cohen, Seth M et al J. Am. Chem. Soc., (1998), 120(25), 6277-6286.) and cesium carbonate (2.16 g, 6.62 mmol) in acetonitrile was added epibromohydrin (0.274 ml, 3.31 mmol). The mixture was heated at 50° C. for 2 hours and then after cooling to room temperature partitioned between water(50 ml) and dichloromethane (100 ml). The dichloromethane was dried and evaporated. Chromatography (EtOAc) gave 0.43 g (64%) of the product as a solid. after cooling to room temperature partitioned between water(50 ml) and dichloromethane (100 ml) The dichloromethane was dried evaporated

Procedure: Carsalam (30.00 g, 0.1840 mol), iodomethane (10.23 ml, 0.1643 mol), sodium carbonate (19.51 g, 0.1840 mol) and dimethylformamide (150 ml) were placed in a 500 ml round bottom flask. The reaction mixture was heated overnight at 80° C. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was filtered and a white solid collected. This was washed with water and the remaining solid placed into a 250 ml round bottom flask. Water was added to the filtrate from the initial filtration and more, white solid precipitated. This material was combined with the solid already in the 250 ml flask and 2N aqueous sodium hydroxide (150 ml) was added. The mixture was heated for one hour before heating was discontinued and the reaction mixture was allowed to cool overnight. Overnight, a white solid precipitated and was isolated by filtration and allowed to dry in vacuo. 21.52 g of N-methylsalicylamide was isolated. After cooling to room temperature the reaction mixture was filtered a white solid collected This was washed with water the remaining solid placed into a 250 ml round bottom flask Water was added to the filtrate from the initial filtration more, white solid precipitated was added The mixture was heated for one hour before heating to cool overnight Overnight, a white solid precipitated was isolated by filtration to dry in vacuo
