Procedure: 0.808 ml of ethyl bromoacetate and 1 g of potassium carbonate were added to a solution of 838 mg of 2-hydroxy-4,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde (J.Chem.Soc. (1953) 820) in 150 ml of acetone. The suspension obtained was heated to reflux overnight and then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated. The crude product was isolated by extraction and purified by chromatography on silica gel and yielded 952 mg of ethyl (2-formyl-4,5-dimethyl-phenoxy)-acetate as a pale yellow solid. The suspension obtained was heated to reflux overnight filtered The filtrate was concentrated The crude product was isolated by extraction purified by chromatography on silica gel
