Procedure: A solution of 8-nitro-quinolin-3-ol (500 mg, 2.63 mmol), methanesulphonic acid 2,2-difluoro-ethyl ester (463 mg, 2.9 mmol), ad potassium carbonate (810 mg, 5.86 mmol) in dimethylformamide (7 ml) was heated at 100° C. for 16 hours. For the workup, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, then saturated aqueous sodium carbonate solution and dichloromethane were added. The organic layer was separated, dried over sodium sulphate, then evaporated. The crude product was purified by chromatography on silica gel using a gradient of cyclohexane/ethyl acetate=10:1 to 1:1 as the eluent yielding 150 mg (24%) of the 3-(2-fluoro-ethoxy)-8-nitro-quinoline as a yellow solid; (calculated) C11H9FN2O3 [236.2]; (found) [M+H]+=237. The organic layer was separated dried over sodium sulphate evaporated The crude product was purified by chromatography on silica gel using a gradient of cyclohexane/ethyl acetate=10:1 to 1:1 as the eluent

Procedure: A solution of 3-bromo-6-chloro-2-fluorophenol (15.4 g, 0.068 mol) in dimethylformamide (DMF; 25 mL) was slowly added to a suspension of sodium hydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil) (4.0 g, 0.10 mol) in DMF (100 mL) and the reaction mixture was stirred one hour. A solution of methanesulfonic acid 2,2-difluoroethyl ester (17.5 g, 0.109 mol) in DMF (10 mL) was slowly added. The resulting solution was heated at 70° C. for eighteen hours. The cooled solution was diluted with water (200 mL) and extracted with ethyl ether. The combined organic phases were dried and concentrated. The residual oil was purified by column chromatography (in hexanes) to give 1-bromo-4-chloro-3-(2,2-difluoroethoxy)-2-fluorobenzene (9.0 g, 0.031 mol): 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 7.26 (m, 1H), 7.09 (m, 1H), 6.12 (tt, 1H), 4.30 (td, 2H). extracted with ethyl ether The combined organic phases were dried concentrated The residual oil was purified by column chromatography (in hexanes)

Procedure: To a solution of 2-bromo-4,6-dichloro-phenol (14.6 g, 60.3 mmol) (intermediate B-1 [A]) in DMF (10 ml) were added K2CO3 (16.53 g, 120.6 mmol) and methanesulfonic acid 2,2-difluoro-ethyl ester (10.7 g, 66.4 mmol) (intermediate B-1 [B]) and the mixture was heated to reflux for 16 h. The DMF was then evaporated in vacuo and the resulting residue was dissolved in EtOAc (300 ml). This solution was washed two times with water, with brine, dried with Na2SO4 and evaporated. The remaining crude product was purified by chromatography (silica gel; hexane) and the title compound (14.5 g, 79%) was obtained as white solid. Procedure: To a solution of 2,2-difluoro-ethanol (6 g, 73.12 mmol) and mesyl chloride (6.26 ml, 80.43 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (40 ml) was added triethylamine (12.66 ml, 87.74 mmol) dropwise at 0° C. After the addition was completed, the mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and was stirred for 1 h. The reaction mixture was then washed two times with water and with brine and dried with Na2SO4. Evaporation of the solvent yielded the title compound (10.7 g, 92%) as yellow liquid. After the addition The reaction mixture was then washed two times with water with brine and dried with Na2SO4 Evaporation of the solvent
