Procedure: 111 g of cetyl glycidyl ether (CGE) and 14.0 g of phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) were co-polymerized in the same manner as in Example 13 to obtain a poly(cetyl glycidyl ether/phenyl glycidyl ether) copolymer. Pale yellow solid. Yield 86%.

Procedure: To a solution of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl hexadecyl ether (10 g, 0.0311 moles in 20 mls water at 90° C. under argon was added a 50% solution of sodium hydroxide (1.37 g, 0.0343 moles) in 10 mls water over 15 minutes. Procedure: 61.1 g (1.0 mol) of ethanolamine was introduced into a 200-ml four-necked flask equipped with a stirrer, a dropping funnel, a thermometer and a reflux condenser and heated to 60° to 70° C. under stirring. 24.3 g (0.082 mol) of hexadecyl glycidyl ether was added dropwise thereto over a period of 45 minutes. After the completion of the addition, the resulting mixture was stirred by heating under the same conditions as those described above for additional two hours. Then unreacted ethanolamine was distilled off under reduced pressure (79° to 81° C./20 Torr). The residue was purified by silica gel flash column chromatography to thereby give 18.4 g of the compound (IVa) at a yield of 63%. Procedure: To a 2-l flask equipped with a stirrer, a dropping funnel, a nitrogen gas inlet tube and a distillation apparatus, 611 g (10.0 mol) of 2-aminoethanol (5-a) and 122 g of ethanol were charged, followed by the dropwise addition of 243 g (0.82 mol) of hexadecyl glycidyl ether (4-a) over 3 hours while stirring under heating to 80° C. in a nitrogen gas atmosphere. After the completion of the dropwise addition, stirring was conducted for further 2 hours at 80° C. From the reaction mixture, ethanol and excessive 2-aminoethanol were distilled off by heating under reduced pressure.
