Procedure: To 1.7 g of 2,3-dimethyl-6-sulfobenzothiazolium tosylate in 20 mL of pyridine at room temperature is added 1 mL of methyl 5-chloro-5-oxovalerate. The mixture is heated at 50-60° C. for 3 hours. The pyridine solvent is removed under reduced pressure, and the reaction is worked up with chloroform and brine, and purified by silica gel column to yield 0.5 g of 2-(5-methoxycarbonyl-2-oxopentylidene)-3-methyl-3H-benzothiazole. A mixture of 0.45 g of this benzothiazole and 0.45 g of phosphorous oxychloride in 5 mL of dichloroethane is heated at reflux for 2 hours to generate 2-(2-chloro-2-methoxycarbonylpropylvinyl)-3-methylbenzothiazolium chloride. The volatile components are evaporated and the crude chloride is used without further purification. The crude chloride and 0.5 g of Compound 12 is stirred in 5 mL of dichloroethane in the presence of 0.45 mL of triethylamine for 2 hours. The volatile components are removed under reduced pressure, and the residue is dissolved in 5 mL of methanol and added dropwise to a solution of 4.5 g of sodium iodide in 30 mL water. The sticky solid is purified by HPLC to yield Compound 37. The pyridine solvent is removed under reduced pressure purified by silica gel column

Procedure: Chlorobenzene (8.13 ml, 79.9 mmol) was dissolved in 100 ml of 1,2-dichloroethane, and 21.3 g (160 mmol) of aluminum trichloride and 12.15 ml (87.9 mmol) of methyl 4-(chloroformyl)butyrate were added thereto, followed by stirring the mixture at room temperature overnight. The reaction solution was poured into hydrochloric acid, and extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was then distilled off under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by silica-gel column chromatography (eluent: a mixture of 4% ethyl acetate and hexane) to obtain 15.8 g of the above-mentioned compound (yield 82%). extracted with chloroform The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate the solvent was then distilled off under reduced pressure The resulting residue was purified by silica-gel column chromatography (eluent a mixture of 4% ethyl acetate and hexane)

Procedure: Methyl-4-(chloroformyl)butyrate (4.0 mmol) is added to a stirred solution of 5-(3-fluoro-4-methanesulfonyl-phenyl)-4-methyl-thiazol-2-ylamine (Example 72) (0.77 g, 2.69 mmol) and heated to 60° C. for 1.5 hours. The reaction mixture is allowed to cool to room temperature and the solvent removed in vacuo. The residue is washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (2×50 ml) and water (1×50 ml). The product is extracted with ethyl acetate (2×50 ml) and the combined organic extracts dried (MgSO4). Removal of the solvent followed by recrystallisation from ethyl acetate affords the titled compound. to cool to room temperature the solvent removed in vacuo The residue is washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (2×50 ml) and water (1×50 ml) The product is extracted with ethyl acetate (2×50 ml) the combined organic extracts dried (MgSO4) Removal of the solvent followed by recrystallisation from ethyl acetate

Procedure: 6.1 Ammonia is passed into 350 ml of cold THF for 30 minutes. 30 g of methyl 4-chlorocarbonylbutyrate are then added dropwise, with ammonia continuing to be passed in at the same time. The crystals which deposit are separated off, and the residue is boiled a number of times with ethyl acetate. The combined filtrates are distilled off, and the residue is recrystallised from ethyl acetate, giving 23.4 g of methyl 4-aminocarbonylbutyrate (“FA”), m.p. 80°. The crystals which deposit are separated off The combined filtrates are distilled off the residue is recrystallised from ethyl acetate
