Procedure: 9-aminominocycline sulfate salt (0.500 g, 0.748 mmol) is dissolved in anhydrous DMF and treated with β-phenylcinnamaldehyde (0.779 g, 3.74 mmol, 5 equivalents) The solution is then treated with DDQ (0.085 g, 0.374 mmol, 0.5 equivalents) and stirred at room temperature for 5 min. ES+ mass spectrometry showed a 1:1 ratio of product and starting material. A second portion of DDQ (0.068 g, 0.300 mmol, 0.4 equivalents) is added. After approximately 5 minutes, acetonitrile (7.5 mL) is added, and the entire reaction mixture is poured slowly into ether (750 mL.) The pink solid is removed by filtration and washed with fresh ether to yield 0.480 g of the crude product. This material is dissolved in water (75 mL) to give a solution at pH 2.2, which is extracted with dichloromethane (2×100 mL.) The pH of the aqueous layer is raised to 3.0 with aqueous ammonia, and the solution is again extracted with dichloromethane (2×100 mL.) The four organic extracts are dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated to a volume of about 2 mL. A small portion of methanol (1 mL) is added, and the concentrated solution is treated dropwise with 1M HCl in ether. The solid precipitate is filtered, washed with fresh ether and dried under vacuum the product as its HCl salt. After approximately 5 minutes the entire reaction mixture is removed by filtration washed with fresh ether

Procedure: The starting material is prepared as follows: The solution of 12 g of dl-p-benzyloxyamphetamine, and 10.4 g of β-phenyl-cinnamaldehyde in 300 ml of absolute ethanol is treated dropwse with the solution of 3 g of sodium borohydride in 6.7 ml of water while stirring. It is refluxed for 18 hours, concentrated to remove most of the ethanol and diluted with water. The mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic layer washed with brine, dried and evaporated, to yield the dl-1-(p-benzyloxyphenyl)-2-(3,3-diphenylallylamino)-propane; its maleate melts at 177°-178°. Procedure: β-Phenylcinnamaldehyde (3.36 g), (carbethoxymethylene)triphenylphospholane (5.68 g), and benzoic acid (0.2 g) were added to anhydrous benzene (80 mL), and the mixture was refluxed under stirring for 3.5 hours. Subsequently, the resultant mixture was cooled to room temperature and condensed under reduced pressure. n-Hexane was added to the residue, and the insoluble matter was collected through filtration and washed several times with n-hexane. The filtrate and the resulting wash liquid were combined and condensed under reduced pressure. The product was purified through silica gel column chromatography (silica gel 40 g, eluent; n-hexane:ethyl acetate=50:1), to thereby yield 3.70 g of the product of interest (yield 82.4%). the mixture was refluxed condensed under reduced pressure the insoluble matter was collected through filtration washed several times with n-hexane The filtrate and the resulting wash liquid condensed under reduced pressure The product was purified through silica gel column chromatography (silica gel 40 g, eluent; n-hexane:ethyl acetate=50:1)

Procedure: A solution of 1.81 g (13.3 mmol) of 2'-hydroxyacetophenone, 2.75 g (13.2 mmol) of β-phenylcinnamaldehyde, 2.64 g NaOH (in 10 mL of water) and 100 mL MeOH was stirred for 24 hours before the solution was poured into 1000 mL water. The resulting mixture was neutralized with dilute HCl and the yellow precipitate was collected by filtration. Recrystallization from MeOH gave a pure intermediate chalcone product. Further oxidation of the above chalcone was carried out with excess H2O2 (30%) in basic (NaOH aq.) MeOH solution for 18 hours. This solution was poured into water, and neutralized with dilute HCl. The resulting light yellow precipitate was collected by filtration and the pure desired product was obtained by recrystallization from MeOH with 28% overall yield. MP: 215°-216° C. Quantum yield (relative to 3-hydroxyflavone in CH2Cl2) 0.004. Extinction coefficient εmax (M-1 cm-1) 23,000. λmax (abs)=378 nm and λmax (em)=470 nm. the yellow precipitate was collected by filtration Recrystallization from MeOH
