Procedure: To a CH2Cl2 solution (200 mL) containing N-methoxy-N-methylamine hydrochloride (8.09 g, 82.9 mmol) and Et3N (12.6 g, 124 mmol) was added valeryl chloride (10 g, 82.9 mmol) dropwise at room temperature. The resulting solution bubbled vigorously and stirred for 2 hours after which time it was carefully quenched with H2O. The organic layer was separated and washed with 2.0 N NaOH. The organics were extracted with CH2Cl2, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo. The resulting colorless oil was taken on without further purification. Procedure: A solution of 2-(t-butoxycarbonylamino)-3-methylpyridine (X) (5.3 g) (prepared, e.g., as described in Preparation 17), in tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) was cooled to -50° C. and a solution of sec-butyllithium (46 ml of 1.3M in cyclohexane) was added. After 10 minutes, the dark solution was treated with N-methoxy-N-methylvaleramide (4.4 g) and the resulting solution was stirred 10 minutes. The mixture was diluted with ether, washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. Crystallization of the residue from hexane afforded 1-[2-(t-butoxycarbonylamino)pyridin-3-yl]hexan-2-one (4.3 g), a compound of Formula (Y), as a white solid m.p. 66°-67° C. washed with water dried over sodium sulfate evaporated Crystallization of the residue from hexane

Procedure: Part B: To a magnetically stirred solution of pentanoic acid methoxy-methyl-amide (8.6 g, 59.3 mmol) at 0° C. in anhydrous THF (100 ml) was slowly added benzylmagnesium chloride (2 M solution in THF, 45 ml, 90 mmol) and the resulting mixture was reacted for 20 hours in a nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured in excess of a cold (0° C.) aqueous hydrochloric acid (4 N solution) and extracted with MTBE. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give crude product. This crude product was further purified using Sepacore equipment: Gradient: (petroleum ether/diethyl ether=98/2 (v/v))=>(petroleum ether/diethyl ether=95/5 (v/v)) to give 1-phenylhexan-2-one (Intermediate II-1) (7.38 gram, 71% yield) as a colorless oil; 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 0.86 (t, J=7, 3H), 1.21-1.31 (m, 2H), 1.48-1.58 (m, 2H), 2.41-2.47 (m, 2H), 3.68 (s, 2H), 7.18-7.36 (m, 5H). at 0° C. the resulting mixture was reacted for 20 hours in a nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature extracted with MTBE The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 filtered concentrated to give crude product This crude product was further purified
