Procedure: Example 2A was repeated but for the sequence of addition of glycerol monolaurate and cetyl alcohol. Instead of being added in the second step, after the equimolar mixture of stearic acid and DDAC, the same amount of the glycerol monolaurate and cetyl alcohol added in Example 2 was added after the addition of TEA. Procedure: p-Nitrophenyl phosphorodichloridate (75 g, 0.29 mol) in anhydrous dichloromethane (300 mL) was added to a 1 L, three necked, round-bottomed flask with stir bar that had been purged with N2. A solution of hexadecanol (71.03 g, 0.29 mol) and N-methylimidazole (23.35 mL, 0.29 mol) in anhydrous dichloromethane (250 mL) was added dropwise over a period of 2 hours. The reaction mixture was stirred for an additional 1 hour before pouring into a 1 L separatory funnel. N-methylimidazole hydrochloride salts separated at the bottom as an oil and were removed from the funnel. Dichloromethane was removed from the mixture at less than 30° C. under vacuum to give an amber oil which was taken up in hexane (400 mL) and placed in a freezer overnight. The reaction mixture was then thawed and the soluble portion was filtered to remove the crystals of p-nitrophenyl phosphorodichloridate. The solvent was removed from the filtrate via rotary evaporation at less than 35° C. to give n-hexyl p-nitrophenyl phosphorochloridate. had been purged with N2 The reaction mixture was stirred for an additional 1 hour before pouring into a 1 L separatory funnel N-methylimidazole hydrochloride salts separated at the bottom as an oil were removed from the funnel Dichloromethane was removed from the mixture at less than 30° C. under vacuum to give an amber oil which the soluble portion was filtered to remove the crystals of p-nitrophenyl phosphorodichloridate The solvent was removed from the filtrate via rotary evaporation at less than 35° C.

Procedure: A mixture of 49 g of hexadecanol (0.202 moles), 28 g of N-carbamylmaleimide (0.2 moles) and 270 mg of zinc chloride (0.002 moles) in 300 mL of p-dioxane was heated to reflux. After 24 hours, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and 200 mL of H2O was added. The resulting solid was filtered, washed with additional H2O and dried to afford 75 g (97% yield) of hexadecyl maleurate. M.P.: 106°-09° C. Procedure: A 36.3 g quantity of n-hexadecanol is dissolved in 200 ml of absolute ether, 3.3 g of metal sodium is added to the solution and the mixture is refluxed until the sodium has been completely dissolved. Subsequently 8.5 g of 2,4-dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidine is added to the solution, and the mixture is refluxed for 3 hours. The resulting reaction mixture is washed with a small amount of water, and the ethereal layer is concentrated to separate out crystals, which are recrystallized from ethanol to give 18.6 g of white crystalline 2,4-di(n-hexadecyloxy)-5-fluoropyrimidine in a yield of 63.1%, m.p. 62°-63° C. has been completely dissolved the mixture is refluxed for 3 hours The resulting reaction mixture is washed with a small amount of water the ethereal layer is concentrated to separate out crystals, which are recrystallized from ethanol
