Procedure: 3-(4-Chloro-2-nitroanilino)-2,5-dihydrothiophene-4-nitrile (14,09 g, 0.05 mol) dissolved in xylene (150 ml) was added to a solution of chloranil (12.3 g, 0.05 mol) in hot xylene (100 ml). The mixture was allowed to reflux for two hours. After cooling, the xylene was evaporated off under vacuum to leave a red-brown solid which was triturated with methanol to give a brick-red solid. The solid was recrystallised from hot methanol to give red crystals which were filtered off, washed with methanol and dried at 50° C. under vacuum. The dried product so obtained was the title compound, m.p. 214° C. to reflux for two hours After cooling the xylene was evaporated off under vacuum to leave a red-brown solid which was triturated with methanol to give a brick-red solid The solid was recrystallised from hot methanol to give red crystals which were filtered off washed with methanol dried at 50° C. under vacuum The dried product so obtained

Procedure: Under nitrogen atmosphere, 6 mL of THF was added to 1.22 g (2 mmol, 0.6 equivalent) of (BrZnCH2COOEt.THF)2. Under argon atmosphere, a solution of 0.82 g (3.33 mmol) of 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone in 26 mL of THF was added dropwise while stirring at 0˜5° C. The mixture was stirred at 20˜25° C. for 1 hour. 10 mL of 1N hydrochloric acid was added dropwise at 20° C. or lower, followed by dilution with 50 mL of ethyl acetate. Then, the layers were separated. The organic layer was washed successively with 5 mL (×2) of 1N hydrochloric acid, 5 mL of water, 10 mL (×2) of an aqueous saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, and 5 mL (×2) of an aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution. After washing, the organic layer was dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. Concentration under reduced pressure afforded 1.04 g of the desired product (yield 94%). Procedure: Methyl-3-amino-4-methoxybenzoate (10.0 g) was treated with concentrated hydrochloric acid (14 ml) and n-butanol (10 ml), under nitrogen, with stirring. The stirred mixture was treated with p-chloranil (13.65 g) and then heated at reflux whilst a mixture of trans-2-hexanal (8 ml) and n-butanol (5 ml) was added dropwise over 2 hours using a syringe pump. After heating at reflux for a further 30 minutes the mixture was treated with a solution of anhydrous zinc chloride (7.52 g) in tetrahydrofuran (60 ml), then allowed to cool slowly to room temperature and then cooled to 0° C. for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated, then diluted with hydrochloric acid (1M) and then washed with diethyl ether. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 6 and the resulting emulsion was treated with ammonium hydroxide and the solution extracted with diethyl ether. The combined dark green extracts were dried over magnesium sulphate then evaporated. The resulting dark green oil was subjected to flash chromatography on silica eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and pentane (3:7, v/v) to give the title compound (1.5 g) as an orange oil. NMR(CDCl3): δ 9.36(d, J=8.9 Hz, 1H), 8.26(d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 7.47(d, J=8.9 Hz, 1H), 7.03(d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 4.14(s, 3H), 3.97(s, 3H), 3.02(m, 2H), 1.86(m, 2H), 1.03(t, J=7.3 Hz, 3H). heated at reflux whilst was added dropwise over 2 hours After heating at reflux for a further 30 minutes the mixture cooled to 0° C. for 18 hours The reaction mixture was evaporated diluted with hydrochloric acid (1M) washed with diethyl ether the resulting emulsion was treated with ammonium hydroxide the solution extracted with diethyl ether The combined dark green extracts were dried over magnesium sulphate then evaporated The resulting dark green oil was subjected to flash chromatography on silica eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and pentane (3:7, v/v)

Procedure: 19-Hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-dione and chloranil are dissolved in t-butanol and rapidly brought to reflux. The t-butanol is removed by distillation at atmospheric pressure at such a rate so that the total reflux and distillation time equals one hour. The dark pasty residue is triturated with hot chloroform and cooled. The solid which remains is removed by filtration and the filtrate successively extracted with water, a 2% sodium hydroxide solution and again with water. The organic layer is dried over magnesium sulfate and the solvent removed under vacuum to yield 19-hydroxy-4,6-androstadiene-3,17-dione. The diene so prepared is dissolved in acetone and chilled in an ice bath. Jones reagent is added over a period of about 10 minutes and stirring continued for an additional 45 minutes. The mixture is poured onto water. The solid which forms is filtered and recrystallized from benzene to yield 4,6-androstadiene-3,17,19-trione. to reflux The t-butanol is removed by distillation at atmospheric pressure at such a rate so that the total reflux distillation time equals one hour The dark pasty residue is triturated with hot chloroform cooled The solid which remains is removed by filtration the filtrate successively extracted with water The organic layer is dried over magnesium sulfate the solvent removed under vacuum
