Procedure: To a solution of 1.61 g (5.0 mmol) of 3-[4-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-5-ylthio)butyl]thiazolidine-2,4-dione and 0.70 ml (5.0 mmol) of 1-heptanal in 20 ml of ethanol, 0.05 ml (0.5 mmol) of piperidine was added, followed by refluxing for 2 hours. After the reaction mixture was cooled, the solvent was distilled off. The residue was dissolved in dichloromethane, washed with water and dried, after which the solvent was distilled off. The residue was purified by column chromatography (eluent, n-hexane/ethyl acetate=4/1) to yield 1.82 g (87.3%, yellow oily substance) of the desired product. by refluxing for 2 hours After the reaction mixture was cooled the solvent was distilled off The residue was dissolved in dichloromethane washed with water dried after which the solvent was distilled off The residue was purified by column chromatography (eluent, n-hexane/ethyl acetate=4/1)

Procedure: 2-n-Butyl-2-hydroxymethyl-propan-1,3-diol and 2-n-pentyl-2-hydroxymethyl-propan-1,3-diol were prepared from n-hexanal and n-heptanal respectively in a manner analogous to that described for the synthesis of 2-n-propyl-2-hydroxymethyl-propan-1,3-diol.

Procedure: To a THF solution of 2,6-dibromoanisole (10 g, 37.6 mmol) was added Mg (0.90 g, 37.6 mmol), and the mixture was heated and stirred at 40° C. Under ice-cooling, n-heptanal (47.2 g, 41.3 mmol) was added dropwise. Aqueous hydrochloric acid solution was added to the reaction mixture, this was extracted with ethyl acetate, and the solvent was distilled off to obtain 8.95 g of a compound (1). the mixture was heated Under ice-cooling this was extracted with ethyl acetate the solvent was distilled off
