Procedure: To a mixture of 203 g 5-heptyl-dihydro-furan-2-one and 390 g dimethylcarbonate was slowly added 40 g of sodium hydride. The temperature increased to 65° C. After the temperature returned to room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into saturated citric acid and extracted with hexane. The organic layer was dried and evaporated to dryness. The residue was distilled to yield 150.5 g of a colourless liquid. returned to room temperature extracted with hexane The organic layer was dried evaporated to dryness The residue was distilled

Procedure: A solution of 19.0 g aluminum chloride, dissolved in methylene chloride, was cooled to 0° C. and 46.5 g dodecylamine in methylene chloride was added dropwise (exothermic). At room temperature 19.3 g gamma-undecalactone was added rapidly. The temperature rose to 36° C. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The mixture was quenched with water and filtered over Celite. The liquid was extracted with ether and washed with water and brine. The solution was dried, filtered and evaporated to dryness. The resulting brown crystals were purified by recrystallization from ether/ethylacetate to give pale yellow crystals. rose to 36° C The mixture was quenched with water filtered over Celite The liquid was extracted with ether washed with water and brine The solution was dried filtered evaporated to dryness The resulting brown crystals were purified by recrystallization from ether/ethylacetate to give pale yellow crystals

Procedure: To a solution of 43.6 g sodium hydroxide in 150 ml of methanol heated to reflux, 200 g gamma-undecalactone were added. After stirring for 2 hours at reflux, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and evaporated to dryness. The resulting crystals were washed with hexane to yield 240 g of colorless crystals. to reflux at reflux evaporated to dryness The resulting crystals were washed with hexane

Procedure: To a suspension of 19.0 g aluminum trichloride in 50 ml of dichloromethane, a solution of 46.5 g dodecylamine in 50 ml of dichloromethane was dropped in at 15-20° C. Then 19.3 g gamma-undecalactone were added quickly at room temperature and an additional 50 ml of dichloromethane was added. After 4 hours, the reaction mixture was quenched with water and filtered through celite. The filtrate was diluted with ether and washed with brine. The organic phase was dried, filtered and evaporated to dryness. The resulting brown solid was purified by recrystallisation to yield 2.65 g of colourless crystals. the reaction mixture was quenched with water filtered through celite The filtrate was diluted with ether washed with brine The organic phase was dried filtered evaporated to dryness The resulting brown solid was purified by recrystallisation
