Procedure: A mixture of 50 g of methyl 3-phenylpropionate, 51.6 g of chloroacetyl chloride and 250 ml of dichloromethane was cooled to 0° C. Then at 0° to 10° C. with stirring, 122 g of aluminum chloride was added slowly, stirred at a room temperature for 2 hours and allowed to stand overnight. The reaction mixture was poured into an ice-concentrated hydrochloric acid and extracted with chloroform, then the chloroform layer was washed with water, dried and the chloroform was removed by distillation to obtain the residue, then isopropyl ether was added to the residue to effect crystallization. The crystals were collected by filtration, and recrystallized from ethanol to obtain 53.4 g of methyl 3-(4-chloroacetylphenyl)-propionate. Colorless needle-like crystals. Melting point: 90°-92° C. stirred at a room temperature for 2 hours extracted with chloroform the chloroform layer was washed with water dried the chloroform was removed by distillation to obtain the residue crystallization The crystals were collected by filtration recrystallized from ethanol

Procedure: To a cooled (-5° C.) suspension of isatin (8.85 g, 0.0602 mol), and methyl 3-phenylpropionate (9.88 g, 0.0602 mol) in 220 mL of dry tetrahydrofuran under a nitrogen atmosphere was added lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) (75 mL, 0.1275 mol of a 1.72M solution) over a 11/2 hour period. The reaction mixture was stirred at -5° C. for one hour and then poured into a cooled (0° to 5° C.) solution of toluene (140 mL), and acetic acid (30.6 g, 0.51 mol, 300% excess) over a 1/2 hour period under a nitrogen atmosphere. The transfer was completed with a 200 mL water wash. To a cooled poured into wash

Procedure: Using the procedure of example 4, 5-chloro-2-[5-[3,4-dihydro-4-oxo-8-propyl-2H-1-benzopyran-7-yl)oxy]pentyloxy]benzenepropanoic acid methyl ester, a pale-yellow oil, was prepared in quantitative yield starting from 0.62 g (3 mmol) of 2,3-dihydro-7-hydroxy-8-propyl-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one and 1.21 g (3.33 mmol) of 2-[(5-bromopentyl)oxy]-5-chlorobenzenepropanoic acid methyl ester. Saponification using the procedure of example 4 afforded 1.01 g (71%) of 5-chloro-2-[5-[(3,4-dihydro-4-oxo-8-propyl-2H-1-benzopyran-7-yl)oxy]pentyloxy]benzenepropanoic acid as a colorless solid, mp 101°-103° C. a pale-yellow oil, was prepared in quantitative yield

Procedure: To a solution of 1.00 g of methyl 3-phenylpropionate in 6 ml of carbon disulfide, 1.62 g of anhydrous aluminium chloride was added under ice-cooling, and then 0.94 g of phenylacetyl chloride was added dropwise and stirring was continued at room temperature for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and extracted with methylene chloride. The methylene chloride layer was washed successively with water, aqueous potassium carbonate solution and water, dried, and then the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (methylene chloride:n-hexane=2:1) to afford 1.05 g of colorless crystals. Recrystallization from isopropyl ether gave colorless flakes, mp 77°~78° C. cooling extracted with methylene chloride The methylene chloride layer was washed successively with water, aqueous potassium carbonate solution and water dried the solvent was removed under reduced pressure The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (methylene chloride:n-hexane=2:1)

Procedure: Under a nitrogen atmosphere, a mixture of methyl 3-phenylpropionate (3.0 mmol), t-butanol (3.6 mmol), a zinc cluster Zn4O (OCOF3)6 (0.0375 mmol), and diisopropyl ether (5.0 ml) was refluxed for 18 hours. As a result, t-butyl 3-phenylpropionate was obtained quantitatively.
