Procedure: A 604 mg (3.00 mmol) sample of p-nitrophenoxycarbonylchloride in 3 mL of methylene chloride was added to a solution of 0.528 g (3.00 mmol) of 2-(t-butyldimethylsilyloxy)ethanol and 0.330 mL of 4-methylmorpholine in 2 mL of methylene chloride cooled in an ice bath. The solution was stirred for 2 hours. The mixture was diluted with methylene chloride, which was washed with water, dried and concentrated. The crude product was chromatographed on silica gel, eluting with 10% ethyl acetate in hexane. The solvent was removed and the product dried to afford 0.453 g of the title compound, which was taken directly to the next step. cooled in an ice bath was washed with water dried concentrated The crude product was chromatographed on silica gel eluting with 10% ethyl acetate in hexane The solvent was removed the product dried

Procedure: To a stirred solution of ethylene glycol (2.44 mL; 6.0 eq.) in dry THF (35 mL), under inert atmosphere (N2), were added imidazole (497 mg; 1.0 eq.) and a solution of tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (1.10 g; 1.0 eq.) in dry THF (35 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at rt over the weekend. Water was added and THF was removed under vacuum. The residual aq. layer was extracted with EA (3×) and the combined org. layers were washed with water, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The title compound was obtained, after purification by CC (Hept/EA 100:0 to 60:40), as a colorless liquid (258 mg; 20% yield). THF was removed under vacuum The residual aq. layer was extracted with EA (3×) layers were washed with water dried over MgSO4 filtered concentrated under reduced pressure

Procedure: A solution of freshly prepared 2-chloro-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (14.2 g, 0.1M) in dry dichloromethane (30 ml) was added, drop-wise, to a stirred mixture of 2-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)ethanol (17.6 g, 0.1M), triethylamine (18.1 ml), 0.13M) in dry dichloromethane (30 ml) at 0° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was allowed to warm to ambient temperature and was stirred for a further 2 hours. The mixture was filtered and the filtrand washed with n-hexane. The filtrate was evaporated in vacuo, diluted with n-hexane (30 ml) filtered and the filtrate evaporated in vacuo to give a brown oil. Procedure: 2-{[tert-Butyl(dimethyl)silyl]oxy}ethanol (1.82 g), 1,6-dibromohexane (7.56 g) and tetrabutylammonium bromide (0.067 g) were stirred under nitrogen and treated with 50% w/v sodium hydroxide (2 g in 4 ml). The mixture was stirred vigorously at 20° C. for 5 days. Water (100 ml) was added, and the product extracted with dichloromethane (3×50 ml). The combined organic layer was separated and dried over Na2SO4 before filtering. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give a residue which was purified by flash chromatography on silica. Elution with 5% ether/cyclohexane followed by solvent evaporation in vacuo gave the title compound (2.35 g).
