Procedure: A solution of 12.3 g (0.05 mole) of 5-chloro-2-methylaminobenzophenone and 11.9 g (0.1 mole) of phenyl isocyanate in 50 ml of methylene chloride was refluxed for 3 days, and then evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residual syrup was stirred with ether until it crystallized. The crystals were collected on a filter and washed with ether to give 12.06 g (66%) of 1-(2-benzoyl-4-chlorophenyl)-1-methyl-3-phenylurea as light yellow crystals. A sample was recrystallized from ethanol to give colorless crystals: mp 158°-160°; 1H nmr (DMSO-d6) δ3.41 ppm (s, 3H), 6.7-7.5 ppm (m, 13H). evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure crystallized The crystals were collected on a filter washed with ether

Procedure: A solution of 12.3 g (0.05 mole) of 5-chloro-2-methylaminobenzophenone and 6 ml (0.1 mole) of methyl isocyanate in 50 ml of methylene chloride was refluxed for 3 days, and then cooled. The solid portion of the reaction mixture was collected on a filter and washed with methylene chloride to give 7.05 g (47%) of 6-chloro-3,4-dihydro-4-hydroxy-1,3-dimethyl-4-phenyl-2(1H)-quinazolinone as light yellow crystals; mp 174°-176°; 1H nmr (DMSO-d6) δ 2.67 ppm (s, 3H), 3.38 ppm (s, 3H), 6.8-7.7 ppm (m, 9H). cooled The solid portion of the reaction mixture was collected on a filter washed with methylene chloride

Procedure: A mixture of 5-chloro-2-methylaminobenzophenone (1.23 g), diethyl malonate (1.6 g) and piperidine (0.1 ml) was heated for 3 hours at 170°-180° C. After cooling, the mixture was treated with isopropyl ether to give crystals, which were recrystallized from ethanol to afford ethyl 6-chloro-1,2-dihydro-1-methyl-2-oxo-4-phenyl-3-quinolinecarboxylate (1.25 g, 73.1%). mp 124°-125° C. The product was identical with the compound obtained in Reference Example 12. was heated for 3 hours at 170°-180° C After cooling to give crystals, which were recrystallized from ethanol
