Procedure: To a solution of 2-bromo-5-cyanobenzyl alcohol (4.59 g, 21.7 mmol) in dichloromethane (80 mL) were added diisopropylethylamine (5.6 mL, 32 mmol) and chloromethyl methyl ether (2.3 mL, 30 mmol) at 0° C., and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. Water was added, and the mixture was extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was washed with brine and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (6:1 hexane/ethyl acetate) to give 18f (4.08 g, 71%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ (ppm) 3.43 (s, 3H), 4.65 (s, 2H), 4.80 (s, 2H), 7.43 (dd, J=8.2, 4.1 Hz, 1H), 7.66 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 1H), 7.82 (d, J=4.1 Hz, 1H). the mixture was extracted with chloroform The organic layer was washed with brine dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate The solvent was removed under reduced pressure The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (6:1 hexane/ethyl acetate)
