Procedure: To a suspension of 2-(4-bromophenyl)-2-methylpropanamide (3 g) in tert-butanol (31 mL) was added [bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzene (8 g) portionwise at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred at reflux temperature for 30 min Pyridine (3 mL) was added to the mixture. After being stirred at reflux temperature for 1 h, the reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in benzene and washed with 1 M citric acid aqueous solution (2 times), sodium bicarbonate aqueous solution (5 times) then brine. The organics were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification by column chromatography (0-20% ethyl acetate in hexanes) gave the product (3.29 g, 84%). 1HNMR (CDCl3) 400 MHz δ: 7.43 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 2H), 7.27 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 2H), 1.59 (br s, 6H), 1.48-1.05 (m, 9H). was added to the mixture After being stirred at reflux temperature for 1 h the reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness The residue was dissolved in benzene washed with 1 M citric acid aqueous solution (2 times), sodium bicarbonate aqueous solution (5 times) The organics were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate concentrated under reduced pressure Purification by column chromatography (0-20% ethyl acetate in hexanes)

Procedure: To a solution of 2-(4-bromophenyl)-2-methylpropanenitrile (3.29 g) in toluene (33 mL) was added potassium trimethylsilanolate (8.37 g) portionwise. After being stirred at reflux temperature for 5 h, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature. Water(17 mL) was added to the mixture dropwise. Filtration gave the product (3.28 g, 92%). 1HNMR (CDCl3) 400 MHz δ: 7.49 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 2H), 7.28 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 2H), 5.52-4.93 (m, 2H), 1.57 (s, 6H). at reflux temperature for 5 h Filtration

Procedure: Potassium trimethylsilanolate (purity: 90%)(250 g, 1,800 mmol) was added at room temperature to a solution of 100 g (450 mmol) of 1-bromo-4-(1-cyano-1-methylethyl)benzene (referential compound 1-1) in 1,000 ml of toluene with stirring in an argon stream and the mixture was stirred for 4.5 hours under a condition of heating to reflux. After the reaction was finished, the reaction solution was cooled down to room temperature and 500 ml of water was dropped thereinto. The mixed solution was stirred for 25 minutes at room temperature and the resulting solid was filtered off and washed with 400 ml of water to give 99 g of the title compound as white powder (yield: 92%). the mixture was stirred for 4.5 hours under a condition of heating to reflux The mixed solution was stirred for 25 minutes at room temperature the resulting solid was filtered off washed with 400 ml of water
