Procedure: To the maleimide (80.4 g, 0.83 mol) in 1.5 L of CH2Cl2 in a 3-neck, 3-L round bottom flask equipped with an addition funnel, internal thermometer, and N2 inlet at 0° C. was added trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) (6.4 mL, 83 mmol). Benzyl(methoxymethyl)trimethylsilylmethylamine (261 g, 1.1 mol) in 500 mL CH2Cl2 was added dropwise via addition funnel over 3 hours with the reaction temperature being maintained below 5° C. After the addition was complete, the mixture was allowed to warm slowly to ambient temperature and then was stirred for 16 h. The mixture was concentrated and the residue was dissolved in 500 mL CH2Cl2 and was washed with 2×50 mL saturated NaHCO3. The layers were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted 2×25 mL CH2Cl2. The combined organics were washed with 25 mL brine, dried over saturated, aqueous Na2SO3, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound which was carried on to the next step without further purification. MS (DCl/NH3) m/z 231 (M+H)+. being maintained below 5° C After the addition The mixture was concentrated the residue was dissolved in 500 mL CH2Cl2 was washed with 2×50 mL saturated NaHCO3 The layers were separated the aqueous layer was extracted 2×25 mL CH2Cl2 The combined organics were washed with 25 mL brine dried over saturated, aqueous Na2SO3 concentrated under reduced pressure

Procedure: To a suspension of 5-benzyltetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,3(2H,3aH)-dione (3.88 g) in THF (80 mL) at −5° C. was added LiAlH4 (1.92 g) slowly. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 4 h, and then quenched with water, the mixture was extracted with EtOAc. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 for 1 h and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was chromatographed with a silica gel column (eluting agent: 200:30:1 (v/v) DCM/MeOH/NH3H2O) to give the title compound as oil (2.07 g, 61.00%). Procedure: A solution of 5-benzyltetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,3-dione, (12.7 g; 55 mmol) {preparation described for the preparation of cis-perhydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,3-dione (b)} is added to a suspension of lithium aluminum tetrahydride (2 g; 55 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran, cooled to 3° C. in an ice bath, in a 500 ml three-necked flask. The reaction mixture is agitated at this temperature for 25 minutes and then water (2 ml), 4 N aqueous sodium hydroxide (2 ml) and water (6 ml) are successively added. The solid thus formed is removed by filtration; the filtrate is dried over magnesium sulfate and then evaporated under reduced pressure, resulting in a white solid which is triturated in diisopropyl ether (50 ml). The solid formed is filtered off, washed with diisopropyl ether (25 ml), and then dried under reduced pressure at constant weight. 5-Benzyl-3-hydroxyhexahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrol-1-one (7 g; 55%) is isolated, the characteristics of which are as follows: The solid thus formed is removed by filtration the filtrate is dried over magnesium sulfate evaporated under reduced pressure resulting in a white solid which is triturated in diisopropyl ether (50 ml) The solid formed is filtered off washed with diisopropyl ether (25 ml) dried under reduced pressure at constant weight

After having purged the reactor with nitrogen, the autoclave is placed under 58 bars of hydrogen at 70° C. for 16 hours. After returning to 20° C., filtration and washing of the catalyst, evaporation is carried out under reduced pressure and the solid obtained is then recrystallized from methanol (100 ml) and drying is carried out under reduced pressure at constant weight. Perhydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,3-dione, (3.6 g) is isolated, the characteristics of which are as follows: is then added After having purged the reactor with nitrogen After returning to 20° C. filtration washing of the catalyst, evaporation the solid obtained is then recrystallized from methanol (100 ml) drying
