Procedure: N-methylbenzylamine (50 g, 0.41 moles), acetone (100 ml) and potassium carbonate 57 g (0.41 moles) were mixed at room temperature and to the slurry obtained, 1-bromopentane 105.7 g (0.7 moles) was added dropwise at the room temperature. Reaction mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 18 hrs. The reaction mixture was filtered, washed with acetone and concentrated under vacuum to an oily residue. The residue was dissolved in 100 ml of MDC and washed with water (3×50 ml). Organic layer was dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated under vacuum to get N-methyl N-pentyl benzylamine as an oil.
