Procedure: Technical grade MoO3 was slurried in the leach solution so as to obtain a 2:1 weight ratio of leach to solids. Slurries were heated to 75°-85° C. and maintained at that temperature for two hours. The slurries were stirred vigorously during the digestion. The molybdenum oxide was separated from the leach solution by filtration. Percent of the molybdenum lost to the leach was determined. The molybdic oxide was then washed twice. Washing involved slurrying the oxide in 70°-80° C. water for 10 minutes and filtering to separate it from the wash. Percent of molybdenum lost to washes was determined. Efficiencies are tabulated in Table I. The better efficiency was obtained by the leach containing NH4NO3. The substitution of nitrate ion for sulfate ion is apparently responsible for the better efficiency. Presence of sulfate ion increases molybdenum solubility in acid solution by forming molybdenum sulfate complexes. When some of the sulfate ion is replaced with nitrate ion, molybdenum solubility decreases. Presence of additional nitrate ion increased oxidation of molybdenum IV to molybdenum VI, resulting in less molybdenum in the sludge after NH4OH digestion. to obtain a 2:1 weight ratio of leach to solids Slurries were heated to 75°-85° C. maintained at that temperature for two hours The molybdenum oxide was separated from the leach solution by filtration The molybdic oxide was then washed twice Washing in 70°-80° C. for 10 minutes filtering to separate it from the wash The better efficiency was obtained by the leach

Procedure: A γ-alumina obtained as 1/16 inch extrudates from Criterion Catalyst Company L.P., Michigan City, Ind. was used. First, an ammonium heptamolybdate solution was prepared by dissolving (NH4)6 Mo7O24 ·4H2O in concentrated H3PO4 and water so that the ammonium molybdate concentration was 9.855 weight %, the H3PO4 concentration was 12.681 weight %, and water made up the rest. Then, 10 g of the alumina was impregnated at 25 ° C. with 5.32 g of the ammonium heptamolybdate solution to form a mixture. The mixture was then calcined in air at 538° C. for 6 hours to produce 10.18 g of a molybdenum oxide- and phosphorus oxide-impregnated alumina containing 2.807 weight % molybdenum and 2.096 weight % phosphorus (control catalyst).

Procedure: The promoters or rate enhancers added to the palladium catalyst are group VIB cabonyls. Such carbonyls are, for example, chromium hexacarbonyl, molybdenum hexacarbonyl and tungsten hexacarbonyl. The carbonyl promoter can be added to the reaction mixture or formed in situ. The chromium carbonyl gives greater catalyst enhancement than either molybdenum or tungsten. The amount of group VIB carbonyl added is from about 0.05 weight percent to 10 weight percent based on the weight of palladium used as the catalyst. formed in situ
