Procedure: Desipramine hydrochloride (1 equivalent, 0.3 gram) was added drop wise to a stirred solution of potassium carbonate (2 equivalents, 0.27 gram) in dry DMF at 0° C. Methyl chloroform (1.2 equivalents, 0.1 ml) which had been dissolved in dry DMF was added drop wise to this mixture and stirred for 6 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was quenched with water, extracted with ethyl acetate, the organic layer separated, washed with brine solution and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The dried material was concentrated and purified by column chromatography to provide a pale yellow liquid (yield: 0.18 gram) and analyzed by HPLC (purity 97.7%). The FTIR, MS and 1H NMR spectra were consistent with the assigned with the empirical formula of C20H24N2O2. was added drop wise to this mixture The reaction mixture was quenched with water extracted with ethyl acetate the organic layer separated washed with brine solution dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate The dried material was concentrated purified by column chromatography

Procedure: 4-Acetylamino-2-methylbenzoic acid (Peltier) is converted into the 5-nitro compound by treatment with cold fuming nitric acid. The reaction mix was poured into crushed ice and the solid product collected by filtration and purified by recrystallization from DMF/water or by silica chromatography. The acetamide is removed by alkaline hydrolysis with 1-10% NaOH solution in 90% ethanol. The reaction mixture was added to excess dilute HCl and the solvent evaporated. The crude acid is esterified with satd. methanolic HCl at room temperature for several days. After removal of solvent the product is partitioned between ethyl acetate and satd. sodium bicarbonate. After washing with water the organic phase is evaporated and the residue purified by silica chromatography. The nitro group is reduced to the amino using hydrogen and palladium on carbon in ethanol or DMF. After filtration through celite and evaporation, the crude diamine is converted to the methyl 2-amino-6-methylbenzimidazole-5-carboxylate using cyanogen bromide in methanol at reflux. The mixture is cooled and poured into satd. aq. sodium bicarbonate and the solid product filtered and purified by recrystallization. The exocyclic amino group is acylated by refluxing with phthaloyl dichloride in pyridine followed by reaction of the diazepine with pyrazole in refluxing acetonitrile according to the method of Katritzky. The compound is reacted with either bromine or N-bromosuccinimide or 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin either neat or in carbon tetrachloride or chloroform or 1,1,1-trichloroethane with the aid of a high intensity sun lamp and/or benzoyl peroxide, to provide the benzylic bromide. It is possible to acylate the diazepine further with isobutryl chloride in pyridine to produce a triply acylated benzimidazole species. This is normally done prior to the bromination. The reaction mix was poured into crushed ice the solid product collected by filtration purified by recrystallization from DMF/water or by silica chromatography The acetamide is removed by alkaline hydrolysis with 1-10% NaOH solution in 90% ethanol The reaction mixture was added to excess dilute HCl the solvent evaporated methanolic HCl at room temperature for several days After removal of solvent the product is partitioned between ethyl acetate After washing with water the organic phase is evaporated the residue purified by silica chromatography After filtration through celite and evaporation at reflux The mixture is cooled poured into satd aq. sodium bicarbonate and the solid product filtered purified by recrystallization by refluxing with phthaloyl dichloride in pyridine followed by reaction of the diazepine with pyrazole

Procedure: A one-liter, four-necked flask was equipped with a thermometer, a condensor, an inlet tube for nitrogen gas and an outlet tube for vent gases. Chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (198.72 g) was introduced into the flask, together with 50 g of anhydrrous 1,1,1-trichloroethane and 86.14 g of 1-(2-aminoethyl)- piperazine. The mixture was heated to 80° C. with continuous agitation for four hours and then cooled to room temperature. The reaction mixture was rapidly filtered to collect the 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine hydrochloride salt which had formed. The filtrate was distilled to yield 182 g of 1-[2-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)- propyl]aminoethyl]piperazine, bp 120°-143° C. at 10 mm Hg (69 kPa) as a pale yellow oil. The yield corresponded to 64% of theoretical. This material was used as an accelerator and adhesion promoter in the sealant compositions of this invention as detailed below in Example 5. A one-liter, four-necked flask was equipped with a thermometer cooled to room temperature The reaction mixture was rapidly filtered to collect the 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine hydrochloride salt which had formed The filtrate was distilled
