Procedure: To a solution of 4-bromomethylpiperidin hydrobromide (12.8 g, 0.05 mole) in water (5 ml), methyl formate (25 ml) and potassium carbonate (10 g) were added and the mixture stirred for 20 hours. The solvent was decanted, and the residue was extracted with two 25 ml portions of ether. The combined organic phases were washed with water, dried and evaporated to give (A) as a colourless oil. The IR spectrum (chloroform) showed a strong band at 1650 cm-1.
