Procedure: A stirred solution of 5.8 grams (0.029 mmole) of 3,4,5-trichlorophenol (commercially available), 3.8 mL (0.032 mole) of benzyl bromide and 4.45 grams (0.032 mole) of potassium carbonate in 75 mL of DMF was warmed to 80° C. where it was maintained during a two-hour period. After this time the reaction mixture was allowed to cool to ambient temperature and then 150 mL of water was added. The mixture was extracted with three 50 mL portions of diethyl ether and the combined extracts were washed with one 50 mL portion of water. The organic layer was dried with sodium sulfate, filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure, yielding 7.1 grams of the subject compound. The NMR spectrum was consistent with the proposed structure. was maintained during a two-hour period The mixture was extracted with three 50 mL portions of diethyl ether the combined extracts were washed with one 50 mL portion of water The organic layer was dried with sodium sulfate filtered the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure

Procedure: To a solution of 4.93 g of 3,4,5-trichlorophenol and 1.19 g of sodium methoxide in 40 ml of methanol is added 7.11 g of methyl α-bromo-α-[p-(p-chlorophenoxy)phenyl]acetate in 10 ml of benzene and 50 mg of potassium iodide. The mixture is refluxed for 20 hours and the solvent removed in vacuo. To the residue is added water and the mixture is extracted with ether. The ether extracts are washed with 10% potassium carbonate and with water and dried (MgSO4). Evaporation of the solvent under vacuum gives a tan oil. The oil is dissolved in chloroform and filtered through a column of silica gel. Removal of the solvent from the second 200 ml cut gives the product as a tan oil. Procedure: In a 250 ml single-neck flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a reflux condenser fitted with a nitrogen bubbler were placed 8.68 g (0.0475 moles) of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzonitrile 9.67 g (0.0489 moles) of 3,4,5-trichlorophenol, 6.75 g (0.0489 moles) of anhydrous K2CO3, and 75 ml of acetonitrile. The mixture was heated to reflux and held there for 3 hrs. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and diluted with 150 ml of water. The product separated as a solid. The solid was filtered off, washed thoroughly with water, and air-dried. The air-dried solid was recrystallized from a mixture of 200 ml of absolute ethanol and 100 ml of acetone to give 11.62 g (71% yield) of purified 2-(3,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)-5-nitrobenzonitrile as small white crystals, mp 162°-164° C.
