Procedure: Aluminum chloride (21.4 g, 161 mmol) was added to a stirring suspension of phthalic anhydride (6 g, 40 mmol) in tetrachloroethane (200 mL) under nitrogen. 1,3-Dihydroxy-2-methylbenzene (5 g, 40 mmol) was added and the mixture quickly thickened. After the precipitates were broken up with a spatula the reaction continued for 1 hour. The solution was diluted with ethyl acetate (˜600 mL) and washed with 1M hydrochloric acid (2×200 mL). The product was extracted from the organic layer into a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate in water (600 mL). The basic aqueous phase was acidified with 3M hydrochloric acid to a pH of 5. The product was extracted from the aqueous phase into ethyl acetate (400 mL), washed with brine (2×100 mL), dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give a brownish solid. The solid was slurried in dichloromethane (20 mL) and filtered to give 2-(2,4-dihydroxy-3-methylbenzoyl)benzoic acid as an off white powder (4.6 g, 16.9 mmol, 42% yield). washed with 1M hydrochloric acid (2×200 mL) The product was extracted from the organic layer into a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate in water (600 mL) The product was extracted from the aqueous phase into ethyl acetate (400 mL) washed with brine (2×100 mL) dried over magnesium sulfate concentrated to give a brownish solid filtered

Procedure: 2-methyl resorcinol (0.161 mmol, 20.024 g) and malic acid (0.165 mmol, 22.129 g) were dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 24 h. The resulting solution was then poured over crushed ice, and the precipitate was collected by vacuum filtration. The precipitate was then washed with 5% NaHCO3 and again collected by vacuum filtration yielding an orange-yellow solid in a 20.64% yield. Procedure: 2-Methylresorcinol (6.285 g, 1 equivalent) and 3,4-dimethoxyphenylacetic acid (9.251 g, 1 equivalent) were added to a round bottom flask. The round bottom flask was attached to a condenser and placed in an oil bath, the whole system was kept under nitrogen. Distilled boron trifluoride diethyl etherate, BF3.OEt2 (42 ml, 5 equiv.) was added to the mixture while stirring. The mixture was refluxed (110° C.). A yellow solid formed at 75 minutes indicating that the reaction had gone to completion. The reaction was heated for a further 10 minutes and cooled to room temperature. The yellow solid was collected by suction filtration and washed with distilled water (200 ml) to remove any excess BF3.OEt2 present. 1H NMR in d-DMSO indicated the yellow solid was 1-(2,4-dihydroxy-3-methyl-phenyl)-2-(3,4-dimethoxy-phenyl) ethanone in >95% purity. The solid was dried on a freeze dryer for 24 hours (6.303 g, 43%).
