Procedure: Compound 13-1 (690 mg) was dissolved in methylene chloride (30 ml), triphenylphosphine (1.33 g) and N-bromosuccinimide (899 mg) were added under ice-cooling, and the mixture was stirred under ice-cooling for 1 hr, and further at room temperature for 3 hr. The reaction mixture was washed with water and saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. Diethyl ether (50 ml) was added, and the precipitated triphenylphosphine oxide was filtered off. The concentrate of the filtrate was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane alone) to give the object product (830 mg) as a colorless oil. cooling cooling for 1 hr The reaction mixture was washed with water and saturated brine dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure Diethyl ether (50 ml) was added the precipitated triphenylphosphine oxide was filtered off The concentrate of the filtrate was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane alone)

Procedure: 3-(4-Methylphenyl)propanol (2.13 g) was heated in 7 ml of 47% aqueous hydrobromic acid under reflux for 5 hours. The solvent was then distilled off under reduced pressure and, after addition of water, the residue was extracted with ether. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was distilled under reduced pressure to give 1.75 g of 3-(4-methylphenyl)propyl bromide. Boiling point: 65° C./0.7 mmHg. under reflux for 5 hours The solvent was then distilled off under reduced pressure after addition of water the residue was extracted with ether The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate concentrated under reduced pressure The residue was distilled under reduced pressure

Procedure: A mixture of cis and trans 4-(4-benzyloxy-phenyl)-cyclohexyl-amine (preparation see under example 43a, 1.25 g, 4.44 mmol), K2CO3 (1.23 g, 8.88 mmol), 1-(3-Bromo-propyl)-4-methyl-benzene (1.18 g, 4.44 mmol) and 2-butanone was stirred at 80° for 48 h. Water was then added and the products were extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried (Na2SO4), evaporated and the residue was purified by chromatography (SiO2, CH2Cl2—MeOH—aq. NH3 140:10:1) to give cis-[4-(4-benzyloxy-phenyl)-cyclohexyl]-(3-p-tolyl-propyl)-amine (180 mg; 10 %) as a light yellow solid (MS: m/e=414.4 (M+H+))and trans-[4-(4-benzyloxy-phenyl)-cyclohexyl]-(3-p-tolyl-propyl)-amine (38 mg; 2%) as a light yellow solid (MS: m/e=414.4 (M+H+)). the products were extracted with EtOAc The organic layer was dried (Na2SO4) evaporated the residue was purified by chromatography (SiO2, CH2Cl2—MeOH—aq. Procedure: A solution of 3-(4-methylphenyl)propylmagnesium bromide is prepared by reacting 20 g. 3-(4-methylphenyl)propyl bromide with 2.5 g. of magnesium turnings in 50 ml. dry tetrahydrofuran. The solution of Grignard reagent is added dropwise to a stirred, cold (-10° C.) solution of 30 g. of 1,10-dibromodecane and 0.2 g. of lithium tetrachlorocuprate in 75 ml. dry tetrahydrofuran at a rate such that the reaction temperature does not exceed -5° C. After one addition hour of stirring at -10° C., the solvent is evaporated and the resultant liquid is fractionated in vacuo to yield 13-(4-methylphenyl)tridecyl bromide as a colorless liquid. does not exceed -5° C After one addition hour the solvent is evaporated
