Procedure: To a stirring solution of 2-mercaptobenzyl alcohol (1.00 g, 7.10 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 mL) at 0° C. was added methyl acrylate (0.70 mL, 7.70 mmol) followed by triethylamine (50 μL, 0.35 mmol). The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stir for 4 h, at which point the solvent was removed with a rotary evaporator. The residue was subjected to column chromatography on silica gel (0-10% ethyl acetate in dichloromethane), affording 1.40 g (86%) of methyl 3-(2-hydroxymethylphenylthio)propionate. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ2.63 (t, 2, J=7), 3.18 (t, 2, J=7), 3.68 (s, 3), 4.79 (s, 2), 7.27 (m, 2), 7.43 (m, 2). was removed with a rotary evaporator

Procedure: To a 5 liter 4-neck round-bottom flask fitted with mechanical stirrer, thermowell, and addition funnel, under a nitrogen atmosphere, was added 150.0 g of o-mercaptobenzyl alcohol, 2400 ml of isopropanol and 295.72 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate. The reaction mixture was cooled in an ice bath, as 246.6 ml of 1-bromo-4-chlorobutane was added dropwise. After addition was complete, the mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature, and stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was filtered through a pad of filter aid, and the solid was rinsed with fresh isopropanol. The solvent was removed by rotary evaporation to give 246.0 g of the product as a brown oil. 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ 1.7-2.1(m,4H); 2.3(br s,1H); 2.85-3.0(t,2H); 3.5-3.6(t,2H); 4.75(s,2H); 7.2-7.4(m,4H). To a 5 liter 4-neck round-bottom flask fitted with mechanical stirrer thermowell, and addition funnel was added dropwise After addition The mixture was filtered through a pad of filter aid the solid was rinsed with fresh isopropanol The solvent was removed by rotary evaporation

Procedure: A mixture of 25 gm o-mercaptobenzyl alcohol (0.18 mole), 39.6 gm 3-iodo-4-hydroxy benzoic acid (0.15 mole), 11.43 g copper powder (0.18 mole), 70 cc 40% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution (0.5 mole) and 300 cc water was placed under nitrogen atmosphere and stirred under reflux for 18 hours. After cooling the mixture was diluted with 400 cc of water and extracted twice with 100 cc of ethyl acetate to remove neutral products. The aqueous fraction was filtered and the filtrate acidified with conc. HCl to afford the title compound as an oil which solidified and was filtered. There was obtained 32.8 g of solid product. under reflux for 18 hours After cooling the mixture extracted twice with 100 cc of ethyl acetate to remove neutral products The aqueous fraction was filtered
