Procedure: A solution of tert-butyl 4-(hydroxymethyl)phenethylcarbamate (2.51 g, 9.99 mmol) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (1.9 mL, 11 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) was stirred and cooled in an ice bath. Methanesulfonyl chloride (0.85 mL, 11 mmol) was added in several portions, and stirring was continued in the bath for 50 minutes. The reaction mixture was transferred to a separatory funnel containing ethyl acetate (200 mL) and brine (200 mL). The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to afford 4-(2-(tert-butoxycarbonylamino)ethyl)benzyl methanesulfonate as a soft white solid. (3.29 g, 100% yield). cooled in an ice bath The reaction mixture was transferred to a separatory funnel The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate concentrated

Procedure: A 1M solution of borane-tetrahydrofuran complex in tetrahydrofuran (100 mL, 100 mmol) was added directly to solid (4-(2-(tert-butoxycarbonylamino)ethyl)benzoic acid (12.4 g, 46.7 mmol). The resulting solution was stirred at ambient temperature for 1 hour, carefully quenched with water (250 mL), and extracted with ethyl acetate (500 mL). The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate (200 mL) and brine (100 mL), dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to afford tert-butyl 4-(hydroxymethyl)phenethylcarbamate as a pale yellow oil (10.0 g, 85% yield). carefully quenched with water (250 mL) extracted with ethyl acetate (500 mL) The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate (200 mL) and brine (100 mL) dried over sodium sulfate concentrated

Procedure: To a solution of the alcohol from above (200 mg, 0.796 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (8 mL) was added activated MnO2 (814 mg, 7.96 mmol) and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 69 h. The reaction mixture was filtered through Celite and the cake was washed with CH2Cl2. The solvent was removed from the filtrate under reduced pressure to give the desired aldehyde as colourless crystals (175 mg, 88%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 1.43 (s, 9H), 2.89 (m, 2H), 3.41 (m, 2H), 4.55 (br s, 1H), 7.37 (d, 2H, J=8.1 Hz), 7.83 (d, 2H, J=7.8 Hz), 9.99 (s, 1H). Procedure: To a solution of ethyl 4-{2-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]ethyl}benzoate (4 g) in tetrahydrofuran (30 ml) was added lithium aluminum hydride (0.82 g), and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 min. Water (3.6 ml) and 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (1 ml) were added to quench the reaction, and the precipitate was filtered off. The filtrate was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (3.8 g) as a colorless oil. to quench the reaction the precipitate was filtered off The filtrate was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate concentrated under reduced pressure
