Procedure: Combine 3,5-dichlorophenylhydrazine (300 g) and ethanol (2 L). Add ethyl pyruvate (153.6 mL) and sulfuric acid (25 mL). After 3 hours, evaporate in vacuo to obtain a residue. Cover the residue with ethyl acetate and water. Add solid sodium bicarbonate until the aqueous layer is neutralized. Separate the layers and extract the aqueous layer with ethyl acetate. Combine the organic layers, dry over MgSO4, filter, and evaporate in vacuo to give ethyl pyruvate-3,5-dichlorophenylhydrazone. evaporate in vacuo to obtain a residue Separate the layers extract the aqueous layer with ethyl acetate dry over MgSO4 filter evaporate in vacuo

Procedure: A mixture of 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (2.53 g), hydrazine hydrate (3.48 g, 5 molar equivalents) and pyridine (12 ml) was heated in an autoclave (purged with argon) for 6 hours at 180° C. The mixture was cooled, the excess hydrazine decanted and the organic phase evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound in 60% yield. It was shown that 65% of the starting material had been consumed, thus indicating that the reaction had occurred with high selectivity. The mixture was cooled the excess hydrazine decanted the organic phase evaporated in vacuo
