Procedure: 5H-benzo[e]pyrido[3,2-b][1,4]diazepin-6(11H)-one (0.863 g, 1 eq.) was suspended in dimethylacetamide (DMA) (15 mL). The reaction was cooled to 0° C. and sodium hydride (60% in mineral oil) (360 mg, 2.2 eq.) was added. The reaction was warmed to room temperature and stirred until gas evolution ceased. The reaction was cooled to 0° C. and 1-bromo-4-phenylbutan-2-one (1.1 g, 1.2 eq.) was added. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction was poured onto 100 mL water and extracted with dichloromethane (2×100 mL). The organic extracts were combined, washed with water (2×100 mL), brine (2×100 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product, 5-(2-oxo-4-phenylbutyl)-5H-benzo[e]pyrido[3,2-b][1,4]diazepin-6(11H)-one (1.56 g) was used without purification. LCMS: 358 [M+H].
