Procedure: To the product of Example 87 (4.87 g, 30 mmol), 2-iodoethanol (5.16 g, 30 mmol) was added with stirring and cooling in an ice bath. The neat mixture was then heated to 100° C. in a water bath for 10 minutes, then removed from the heat and stirred for an additional 10 minutes. The reaction mixture was then dissolved in 50 ml of ether, washed with water (1×30 ml), 5% NaOH (2×30 ml), and again with water (2×30 ml). The ether layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. A light yellow liquid product was obtained in 67% yield from valproic acid (6.0 g). Silver nitrate gave a bright yellow precipitate. NMR analysis confirmed the identity of the product. cooling in an ice bath removed from the heat stirred for an additional 10 minutes The reaction mixture was then dissolved in 50 ml of ether washed with water (1×30 ml), 5% NaOH (2×30 ml) The ether layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate the solvent was removed under reduced pressure

Procedure: To 4.32 g (30 mmol) of valproic acid in an ice bath, thionyl chloride (3.60 g, 30 mmol) was slowly added, with stirring. The neat mixture was allowed to come to room temperature and then heated in a water bath at 50° C. for 30 minutes. 50 M1 portions of dry benzene were twice added and removed under reduced pressure. The resultant product was used in subsequent reactions without further purification. to come to room temperature removed under reduced pressure The resultant product was used in subsequent reactions without further purification

Procedure: A mixture of 2,4,6-triiodophenol (2.0 g, 4.24 mmol), 2-propylvaleroyl chloride (2.5 ml, 12.7 mmol, 3 eq) and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP; 20 mg) in 20 ml of acetonitrile was refluxed under argon overnite. The reaction mixture was cooled and poured into excess aqueous sodium bicarbonate and then extracted with dichloromethane. The dichloromethane extract was dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated to give the crude product (2.42 mmol, 95%) as a pink solid. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate gave 1.75 g (68%) of pure product, mp 99°-101° C. was refluxed under argon overnite The reaction mixture was cooled extracted with dichloromethane The dichloromethane extract was dried over magnesium sulfate filtered evaporated to give the crude product (2.42 mmol, 95%) as a pink solid Recrystallization from ethyl acetate
