Procedure: To a mixture of PPA (10 g) and acetoacetamide triethylamine (2.02 g, 20 mmol) was added benzylacetone (5.92 g, 5.98 mL, 40 mmol). The resulting mixture was heated at 125° C. for 3 hours. The brown mixture was poured onto crushed ice and neutralized with solid NaHCO3. The mixture was filtered to give a yellow solid, which was purified by flash column (silica, 10% MeOH/DCM) to give the pyridinone (2.29 g, 53.8%) as a yellow solid. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 2.07 (s, 3H), 2.37 (s, 3H), 3.81 (s, 2H), 6.38 (s, 1H), 7.00-7.40 (m, 5H); MS (CI) m/z 214.1 (MH+). The brown mixture was poured onto crushed ice The mixture was filtered to give a yellow solid, which was purified by flash column (silica, 10% MeOH/DCM)

Procedure: In a similar fashion an equal molar amount of 4-phenyl-2-butanone (Aldrich Chemical Co.), (R)-1-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethylamine and 1.25 equivalents titanium(IV) isopropoxide were mixed and the intermediate imine reduced with ethanolic sodium cyanoborohydride. Work-up and repetitive preparative thin-layer chromatography using 5% methanol in chloroform afforded (R,R)-N-(4-phenyl-2-butyl)-1-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethylamine, 21D [m/z (rel. int.) 283 (M+, 4), 268 (13), 178 (45), 135 (100), 105 (15), 91 (43), 77 (11)] and (S,R)- N-(4-pbenyl-2-butyl)-1-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethylamine, 21E.

Procedure: The procedure of Example 41 was repeated with the exception that 3.5 g of benzyl acetone in place of cinnamic aldehyde and 2.26 g of 3-ethyl-4-methylpyridine were used in Example 41, to obtain 3.26 g (yield: 59.8%) of (E)-1-(3-ethyl-4-pyridyl)-2-methyl-4-phenyl -1-butene (hereinafter referred to as compound 55) and o.95 g (yield: 17.4%) of (Z)-1-(3-ethyl-4-pyridyl)-2-methyl-4-phenyl-1-butene (hereinafter referred to as compound 56). The analytical results are shown below.
