Procedure: Into a 250-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a mixture of methyl 4-(bromomethyl)-3-iodobenzoate (compound 20.1, 3.0 g, 8.5 mmol) and sodium methoxide (1.8 g, 33 mmol) in methanol (100 mL). The resulting solution was stirred for 2 h at 50° C., then cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (50 mL) and the solids were filtered off. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to yield 2.0 g (77%) of the title compound as a yellow solid.
