Procedure: To a stirred and cooled mixture of 28.4 parts of 2-chloro-m-toluoyl chloride, 12.6 parts of thiophene and 80 parts of methylene chloride is added dropwise a mixture of 39 parts of stannic chloride in 40 parts of methylene chloride at 10° C. Upon completion, stirring is continued first for 2 hours a 20° C and further for 3 hours at reflux. The reaction mixture is poured onto a mixture of ice-water and concentrated hydrochloric acid solution. The methylene chloride solution is separated, washed three times with water, dried, filtered and evaporated. The residue is distilled, yielding 2-chloro-m-tolyl 2-thienyl ketone; bp. 197° -199° C at 12 mm. pressure. cooled is added dropwise Upon completion, stirring at reflux The methylene chloride solution is separated washed three times with water dried filtered evaporated The residue is distilled

Procedure: 2 mol of phthalide (268 g) were initially charged with 27.8 g of TPPO (0.1 mol) and 7.9 g (0.04 mol) of BF3 etherate. At 140-150° C., a total of 233 g of gaseous phosgene (2.33 mol) were introduced over a period of 8 h. After an extra stirring time of 1 h at 140° C., the excess phosgene was stripped using nitrogen. The discharge (415 g) contained 88.4 GC area % of o-chloro-methylbenzoyl chloride and 0.1% of phthalide. Fractional distillation of the crude discharge gave 363 g (96% of theory) of o-chloromethylbenzoyl chloride of a purity of 99.8%. After an extra stirring time of 1 h at 140° C. Fractional distillation of the crude discharge

Procedure: A solution of 2-chloro-3-methylbenzoyl chloride (18.05 mmol), [prepared as described above] in dry CH2Cl2 (60 ml) was cooled to 0° C. and AICl3 (2.41 g, 1 eq.) was added. After ten minutes, anisole (1.96 ml, 1 eq.) was added. The resulting orange colored reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature, stirred for 3 h and then poured on ice. The product was extracted into ether, washed with brine, and dried over MgSO4 . The solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give 3-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-2-chlorotoluene (4.55 g, 97% yield) as a solid, mp 64.7°-65.8° C. AICl3 (2.41 g, 1 eq.) was added After ten minutes to warm to room temperature poured on ice The product was extracted into ether washed with brine dried over MgSO4 The solvent was evaporated in vacuo

Procedure: To a suspension of 2-chloro-3-methylbenzoic acid (6.75 g, 39.39 mmol) [prepared as described above] in EtOAc were added a few drops of DMF and oxalyl chloride (5.1 ml, 1.5 eq.). After stirring the reaction mixture for 1.5 h, the solvent was removed in vacuo to give 2-chloro-3-methylbenzoyl chloride, which was used in the next step without further purification. the solvent was removed in vacuo
