Procedure: To a 250 ml 3-necked round-bottom flask, 2,3-dimethylphenylboronic acid (3.6 g, 24 mmol), 3,4-dimethylbenzoic acid (3.0 g, 20 mmol), a selected palladium catalyst (0.6 mmol), dimethyl dicarbonate (2.7 g, 30 mmol) and potassium carbonate (6.22 g, 45 mmol) were mixed with 150 ml of dry dioxane. The reaction mixture was heated at 80° C. overnight to become a viscous reaction mixture. 20 ml of water was added to dissolve the heterogeneous reaction mixture, and dioxane was evaporated to dryness. The aqueous solution as extracted with 20 ml of ethyl acetate, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and then evaporated to dryness. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluted by hexane/ethyl acetate=20/80 to afford 2.0 g (33%) of the product. was evaporated to dryness The aqueous solution as extracted with 20 ml of ethyl acetate dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate evaporated to dryness The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluted by hexane/ethyl acetate=20/80

Procedure: A 15 mL round bottom flask was charged with (+)(4aR)-(10bR)-4-methyl-8-bromo-10b-methyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,10b-octahydrobenzo[f]quinolin-3-one (200 mg, 0.65 mmol), tetrakis (triphenylphosphine) palladium (0) (23 mg, 0.02 mmol), 2,3-dimethylphenylboronic acid (117 mg, 0.78 mmol), 0.65 mL of 2M sodium carbonate solution and 2 mL of THF, fitted with a reflux condenser, and the stirred mixture was heated at 80°, under nitrogen, for 24 h. The mixture was cooled, diluted with chloroform (50 mL) and washed with brine (2×50 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over sodium sulfate, concentrated, and purified by silica gel chromatography (ethyl acetate eluent), to give 55 mg (25%) of the title compound as an amorphous solid. mp 133°-140° FDMS: m/e=333. α[D]589 +61.90 (c=1.05, methanol). fitted with a reflux condenser the stirred mixture was heated at 80°, under nitrogen, for 24 h The mixture was cooled washed with brine (2×50 mL) The combined organic extracts were dried over sodium sulfate concentrated purified by silica gel chromatography (ethyl acetate eluent)

Procedure: Using a method similar to Example 16 d), 2.0 g (0.011 mol) of (1), 1.95 g (0.013 mol) of 2,3-dimethylphenylboronic acid and 2.6 g (24.6 mmol) of sodium carbonate were placed in 55 ml of ethylene glycol/5 ml of water in the reaction vessel, the mixture was degassed a number of times and saturated with argon. After addition of 18 mg (0.09 mmol) of palladium acetate and 0.15 g (0.27 mmol) of TMSPP, the reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hours at 125° C. After addition of 60 ml of water, the aqueous phase was extracted 4 times with 60 ml each time of ether, the combined ether phases were washed with 60 ml of water and 60 ml of saturated sodium chloride solution and dried over magnesium sulfate. Removal of the solvent gave 2.9 g of 2-methyl-7-(2,3-dimethylphenyl)-1-indanone as solid. similar to Example 16 d the mixture was degassed a number of times the aqueous phase was extracted 4 times with 60 ml each time of ether the combined ether phases were washed with 60 ml of water and 60 ml of saturated sodium chloride solution dried over magnesium sulfate Removal of the solvent

Procedure: In a vial were placed methyl 6-cyano-7-(4-(3-iodophenylcarbamoyl)phenoxy)chroman-4-carboxylate (Preparation 3) (56 mg, 0.101 mmol), 2,3-dimethylphenylboronic acid (19.70 mg, 0.131 mmol), Na2CO3 (32.12 mg, 0.303 mmol), toluene (1 ml), and water (0.1 ml). The mixture was degassed with Argon for few minutes. Tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) (5.836 mg, 0.0050 mmol) was added and the vial was sealed. The mixture was stirred for 17 hours at 100° C. The crude mixture was purified on silica gel (EtOAc in hexanes gradient) to provide 34.4 mg of the title compound as a thin film (64%). The mixture was degassed with Argon for few minutes the vial was sealed The crude mixture was purified on silica gel (EtOAc in hexanes gradient)
