Procedure: A stirred solution of 2.2 mL (0.016 mole) of diisopropylamine in 200 mL of tetrahydrofuran was cooled to -80° C., and 6.4 mL (0.016 mole) of n-butyllithium (2.5 Molar in hexanes) was added dropwise during a 15 minute period. Upon completion of addition, the reaction mixture was stirred for an additional 15 minutes. While still maintaining the reaction mixture temperature at -80° C. to -75° C., a solution of 2.5 grams (0.016 mole) of 6-phenylhexanenitrile in 50 mL of tetrahydrofuran was added dropwise during a 30 minute period. Upon completion of addition, the reaction mixture was stirred at -80° C. for an additional 30 minutes. After this time, a solution of 1.3 mL (0.016 mole) of ethyl formate in 50 mL of tetrahydrofuran was added dropwise during a ten minute period. Upon completion of addition, the reaction mixture was stirred for two hours at -80° C. to -70° C. The reaction was quenched with 100 mL of water, and the mixture was acidified with 6N hydrochloric acid. The mixture was extracted with two 150 mL portions of diethyl ether. The combined extracts were dried with magnesium sulfate and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to a residue. The residue was subjected to column chromatography using silica gel. Elution was accomplished using 1% to 3% methanol in methylene chloride. The appropriate fractions were combined and concentrated under reduced pressure, yielding 2.7 grams of 2-cyano-6-phenyl-1-hexen-1-ol. The NMR spectrum was consistent with the proposed structure. Procedure: A stirred solution of 15.0 grams (0.0062 mole) of 1- methylsulfonyloxy-5-phenylpentane and 9.1 grams (0.190 mole) of sodium cyanide in 150 mL of N,N-dimethylformamide was heated at 50° C. to 55° C. for about 60 hours. After this time the reaction mixture was poured into 400 mL of water. The mixture was extracted with three 250 mL portions of diethyl ether. The combined extracts were then washed with three 200 mL portions of water and 200 mL of an aqueous solution saturated with sodium chloride. The organic layer was dried with magnesium sulfate and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure, yielding 10.2 grams of 6-phenylhexanenitrile. The NMR spectrum was consistent with the proposed structure. The mixture was extracted with three 250 mL portions of diethyl ether The combined extracts were then washed with three 200 mL portions of water and 200 mL of an aqueous solution saturated with sodium chloride The organic layer was dried with magnesium sulfate filtered The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure
