Procedure: To a stirred mixture of 4-(4,6-dimorpholin-4-yl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aniline (0.140, 0.40 mmoles) in methylene chloride at 0° C. was added triphosgene (0.25, 0.84 mmoles) and Et3N (3 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred for 20 minutes at 0° C. Then 1-(4-aminophenyl)ethanol (0.10 g, 0.73 mmoles) was added to the mixture. The reaction mixture was stirred for about 16 hours at room temperature. The solvent was removed. The residue was dissolved in DMSO and place at HPLC using acetonitrile buffer TFA to give 48 mg (24%) of [4-(4,6-dimorpholin-4-yl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)phenyl]-3-[4-(1-hydroxyethyl)phenyl]urea. M+H 506.4. The reaction mixture was stirred for about 16 hours at room temperature The solvent was removed The residue was dissolved in DMSO

Procedure: Dehydration of 9.2 g of p-aminophenylethanol (Chem. Abs., vol. 59:3797f) was done by heating with 8.8 g of KOH in the flame of a Bunsen burner under a nitrogen atmosphere (about 6 mm pressure). The product was collected by cooling with a Dry Ice-acetone bath. The solution was extracted with ether, dried over KOH and filtered. Evaporation of the ether gave p-aminostyrene, which was characterized by IR and NMR; the yield was 6.4 g. flame of a Bunsen burner under a nitrogen atmosphere (about 6 mm pressure) The product was collected by cooling with a Dry Ice-acetone bath The solution was extracted with ether dried over KOH filtered Evaporation of the ether

Procedure: A solution of C9 (0.253 mmol) and anhydrous DMSO (0.5 ml) was treated with 1-(4-aminophenyl)ethanol (0.277 mmol) followed by potassium phosphate dibasic (0.746 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 1.5 days, and treated with additional 1-(4-aminophenyl)ethanol (0.583 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 15 hours and concentrated. The resultant residue was purified first by column chromatography (silica gel; 10% (NH4OH/MeOH)/CH2Cl2) followed by preparatory thin layer chromatography developed in 5% MeOH/CH2Cl2 to provide 12. The crude reaction product was concentrated, dissolved in 10 mL of ethyl acetate and washed with 5 mL of water followed by, 5 mL of 0.5 M HCl (aq.), 5 mL of 10 NaHCO3 (aq.) and finally 5 mL of water. The organic phase was dried with MgSO4, filtered, and the solvent was evaporated. The product was further purified by column chromatography on silica gel eluting with a gradient of toluene (T) and ethyl acetate (E) from 4:1 to 1:2 (T:E). The product N-(4-(2-(hydroxy)ethyl)phenyl)pent-4-ynamide was characterized by NMR and MALDI-TOF. Procedure: A mixture of 6-bromo-1-cyano-3-methyl-3H-dibenz[f,ij]isoquinoline-2,7-dione (2.0 g), p-aminophenylethanol (15 g), potassium acetate (2.0 g), a trace of cupric acetate, and butanol (10 ml) was heated gradually to about 80° C., held for 5-10 minutes, and then drained into 250 ml of 10% HCl. The solid product was collected by filtration, washed with water, dried in air, and recrystallized twice from nitrobenzene to remove a red impurity and traces of starting material. A yield of 0.65 g of product, which had a visible absorption maximum at 587 nm in acetone, was obtained, thus imparting a reddish-blue color to acetone. The structure is as follows: ##STR6## The solid product was collected by filtration washed with water dried in air recrystallized twice from nitrobenzene to remove a red impurity and traces of starting material was obtained
